.....I go around as fast as I can to look out in the open field.See nothing,he could be anyplace now.But I figure he won't go far,he's hurtin'.So I go to the most likely cover,a big wind row of old apple trees.Looking in and around,I don't see anything,I need to get to work, and I'm getting down now.
Here's where I got REAL,REAL LUCKY!!!I clear the end of the wind row, look back at the edge of the woods(about 100yds) and see something black.Pick up my binos and see it's him, where he crash landed!! His head is up,but he a mess.Sit down to think about my next move.Look around and pick a course with my binos that I can sneek up to about 20yds of him.So I take off, hook my tracker up to another arrow.

As I get to about 20yds,he sees me and gets as flat to the ground as he can. He's slightly uphill, all I can see is a bit of his back.Since he knows I'm there and he's not running,I figure I might as well get as close as possible to him before I try another shot.I get to about 15yds,but can still just barely see his back.I raise up as high as I can,and try a shot to break his back...arrow just takes feathers off his back,he trys to get away but can't,and I am on him in a second...I had him!!!!!

look what came out of the woods while I was taking pictures...

Curt, Time, effort, skill and a "whatever it takes" attitude, equals success. You had it all.

Congratulations on a fine job and a great bird, the hard way.

By the way,If anybody doesn't know the cast of charactors I speak of in this thread.Check out the thread  "Trainwreck and a Bully Hen"

Nolz, you're absolutly right!!! Had I have shot him in the woods,I probably wouldn't have found him without the string tracker. I said I got luckey...I wasn't lyin'!!!!

Warren, Thanks Bud

Thinking back on my first shot,I guess I wasn't concentrating like I should have been.Because if I was,I wouldn't have remembered all the detail(him going slick while I drew).I think if I was concentrating on my spot like I should have.I wouldn't have remembered all that. Something I need to work on       :knothead:    .
All of my best shots I don't remember anything but the arrow striking!!

Thinking back again( I do alot of that, trying to learn from experience I guess),as most of you know a turkey can't fly if he can't use his legs to push off.I wonder if that bird positioned himself on that tiny cliff just to try to get enough air under his wings to try to get away.It would have been over right there had it not been for that.

By the way,the shot took him broadside into the near thigh/drumstick juntion, through the bottom of his breast, into a bit of gut,and cut the hell out of the muscle on the off drumstick. The Snuffer did a lot of damage. That's why I like them big Snuffers, for those less than perfect hits.I love the Woodsmans,I've used them successfully on turkeys before, but I'll stick with my Snuffers for turkeys.Woodsmans for everything else!!!

Curt- Now that is an awesome huntin story with neat pics to carry us along!!

You call it luck-- i'm not sure that is what it is. I like determination and a plan. I especially liked the "sit down and plan" comment.

See Ya!!

Thanks guys,I'm pretty sure I want to either sell/trade in my blind for the new Matrix.I believe I would have killed Trainwreck opening day,if I had more left/right shooting room.He was only about 5-6yds from me,but just out of view.I contimplated shooting him thru the netting in horizontal viewing window as he walked away.

I know the guys from DB are real happy with the Matrix.

Hello, great story! The big heads really make a difference. I shoot the 2" diameter Simmons landsharks, they fly like darts and do so much damage. The arrow usually stays in the bird, where you want it.

This year I bought black window covers from Double Bull, for my T5 recurve model. They slide right over your existing window flaps. The window coverings are black when viewing the windows from the outside. You can open the windows, with turkeys around you and they don't notice, since it looks black also when the windows are open. I had 3 jakes 10 yards away, and opened and closed the window 5 times and they never noticed.

Guru

Bishs, Thanks man....I bet those Landsharks are great for turks, wicked looking head!!
Wish I would have taken pix of the damage the Snuffer did......It still amazes me that this bird was alive after 1 1/2 hrs!!

Interesting idea about the black window flaps.Them boys from DB are always thinking
