HH bug got me ... Part One!

Even though I only draw a bit over 26 inches, anchor just past the corner of my mouth and shoot 9 to 10 grains per pound, my point on is way out there, over 60 yards with my faster bows like my Schulz. That put my point well below the target at anything 20 yards and under. Hill stressed it over and over, imaginary secondary aiming point. Even though he explained his aiming in very fundamental terms in Hunting The Hard Way, he also gave advice to not get too fundamental in the aiming thing. Like Schulz said, even Hill could not be picking a specific secondary spot, putting his arrow tip on it and then release when shooting some of the close range trick shots. But I would bet in his secondary sight he saw something familiar. Just like when I have someone tossing pennies for me, I pretty much can see if I am going to hit the penny or the penny tosser when I release.

Same draw here,just a hair over 26.I don't anchor as far back as Howard.Mine is more towards the front of my mouth for tne same reason Byron anchors farther forward,took get my arrow right under my eye.Round face and glasses,just won't line up at a longer draw.
On a paced off,known distance shot at a stationary target,like an apple on someone's head,I'd say there's plenty of time to get your arrow in the right spot in your sight picture.You're aiming during the draw and dealing with a well known,familiar,heavily practiced sight picture.Even with a thrown target,it has alot to do with the timing and shooting when the target is close to it's apex and almost stationary.Howard said to not go back and forth between your arrow and your target.The arrow is just in your "secondary" vision.Not like a measured gap shooter who goes between looking at "the spot" and his arrow point setting the exact distance while holding at anchor.I don't think anyone will ever know exactly how Howard did it and how much was just God given talent,but it's pretty cool that after all these years there are still a bunch of guys trying to figure it out and shoot like him.

A rear view of the riser and shelf during the process. I really like the Bubinga riser with the Juniper. It has a Black Walnut look to it, only a little redder color that matches the Juniper well.

To answer the why is my point on so far. My Hill style bows are from 55 to 65 pounds at my draw. My arrows are net length, even with broadheads, I aim where the shaft comes to the bow, not the any part of the broadhead. My favorite bows are pretty quick, but perhaps it is just the position of my anchor/eye/arrow shelf triangulation that makes the point on that far.
Three requirements to get the newly opened up penny tosser position.
1. You need to be a good tosser as it is important to toss the pennies where I am shooting.
2. You need to have very good knees, because it may take awhile to get it all grooved in.
3. You need to have reflexes like a flea on a hot dog.

This is actually brown glass on the back of the bow. These pics don't do it justice. I set a German silver medalion in the riser opposite the shelf side of the riser. I'll have the bow completed shortly and will try to put up better pics of the finished project.

Thanks guys, Green, I originally had in mind a dark brown leather wrap from HHA for the handle, but during my conversation with Jason, he must have thought I said light brown. Anyway, I want to put a thinner leather on it as I want to keep the handle profile as slim as possible. I like a narrow grip. The leather I have that is the thickness I like is also a light brown. Actually it doesn't look bad with the LB color and the shelf leather is of course LB, so I just might go with it. Anyone have a thinner leather in a dark color? I may go to a craft store this weekend while the final coat of poly is drying, and see what I can find. I still think a dark brown or black would look the best. Lighter color wraps soon show dark and dirty and prefer the dark wrap for that reason also.

Wish I had the right color to send you. All the dark leather I have would be too thick/stiff. Good luck at the craft store...they'll most likely have what you want. Looking forward to seeing your bow come to life.
