I have a friend whis is shooting a 58" Bear Grizzly, 55# @ 28"

He wants to shoot a 550-600 grain carbon arrow with 125 garin brodhead if possible.

That is about impossible, even the CE heavy ones may get ya there in weight but with 125 up front they would be way stiff. He could try a carbonwood 3000 with 275-300 grains up front and he would get there with a 29" arrow. Shawn

I agree and told him that he would probably have to put plenty of weight up front, he can use the 125 grain heads glued on 125 steel inserts.  He wants to keep using the same broadhead.

I shoot the Cabela's 55-75 carbons. 100grn brass/125 Montec up front and come in around 475 grains. If weight tubes or aquarium tubing or nylon rope were added he could get up there...JMHO

I shoot the CX heritage 150's. These are advertised at 10gr per inch. 29" arrow (290gr) + 50gr insert + 125gr point = 465gr. You could then add the 3gr per inch weight tube at 27" would add another 81gr giving you a grand total of 546 grains not including your feathers, nock, glue, and paint. I'm not sure if you'd need the 150's or the 250's for spine, but the 250's are 11gr per inch. Shawn should be able to set you straight on the spine aspect, but those weights should be attainable with weight tubes.

May want to try GOLD TIP TRADITIONALS ...
75/95 'S   FULL LENGTH  w/ a 200 grain tip/broadhead... should end up a little over
600 grains total...
the heavy broadhead and full length will reduce the spline...

He's shooting 2016's right now and says he's having penetration problems even on well place shots ?

With my 52-56lbs recurves/29" draw I'm shooting 30" 4560 CX Terminator Hunters (9.5GPI), 3-4" vanes, 50 grain brass insert, 125 grain point, for a total arrow weight of 530 grains.  This is the actual weight measured with a scale.

If a 100 grain insert were used it would be 580 grains.

TH's are now discontinued but you can find them if you look.

If I were to substitute a CX Heritage 250 or 4560 Terminator Select Hunter (11GPI), they would add another 45 grains to the overall weight. That would be a 575 grain arrow with 50 grain inserts and 625 grains with 100's...

Carbonwood 3000,29" BOP with 100 gr.brass inserts,125 gr.point will give you 540 grs..I have this setup and they fly great out of my Thunder Mountain flatbow 58#@28.

the 150 carbon express with a 50 grain brass insert plus 125 grain broad and fletching, nock and ect,  will get him over 500 grains  that ought to give you a pass thru on a bison

Visiting with Tim Finley (Kota Bows) a few weeks ago, the subject of arrows and weight came up.

He uses 500 grain carbons featuring the 150 grain Woodsman broadhead from his trademark longbows.  He has absolutely no problem killing anything he chooses to hunt.

This is the opinion/choice of one of the top bowyers around and one of the best bowhunters in ND, Traditional or High Tech....
