Howdy Gang,
I have a very nice '68 Griz that I saved from my old man who was using it for a backup bow for bowfishing duty. Its in overall good shape but in need of a refinish job. Its a '68 Griz, 56" amo and 50 lbs.  It has brown glass with white tips.  What I would like to know is the what kind of wood it is. The riser is one solid piece of wood. The reason I saved it from bowfishing was because it was unusually pretty for a griz. As you can see it is a darker wood with great grain.  I thought at first that it may of been tigerwood, but now I'm second guessing myself and thinking that it just may be a nicely figured piece of shedua.  As always any and all info would be appreciated.
Thanks Gang,
Aaron

This wood appears to me to be Gonzalvo Alves, which is often called tigerwood. I have seen this wood used in some Bear bows in the late '60s, Grizzlies and Kodiak Hunters. However, the accents of the grain seems to be about 90 degrees out from what I usually see, which might make positive identification a bit trickier.

Aaron, I have also seen that wood spelled: Goncalo Alves. I think that I have seen at least one other spelling, as well.

The grain is turned 90 degrees from the usual carving. I think that is why its throwing me off so much.

That's the best looking 68 Grizzly I have ever seen.  Congrats on a nice bow!

WOW, Thats cool. The grain orientation is proper for best strength, in a couple pics I thought it was futurewood but that would be a might early for that. I agree with Ceme24,

Thanks Guys,
I was thinking it was tigerwood, but the turn in the woodgrain was throwing me off. Time to get her cleaned up and in proper form. No more carp slime for this gem.

I bought this piece of Tigerwood/Goncalo Alves a couple of years ago..hoping to get a couple of risers out of it.

Nice,   Love the grain in Goncalo Alves.  That plank ought to make a couple of gems!
