Was wondering if anyone knows the Specific model knife if any that was meant to fit in knife slot on outside of BEAR "NIMROD" quiver ?

Doesn;t seem like 648 is long enough to fit in there correctly ??

I just tried my Western 648 Jigged Bone and it is to small knife needs to be 1-1/2 inches longer at least with larger blade it seems.
 I wonder if the built in sheaths on the Nimrod quivers were all different sizes ?

The Western 648 was the standard knife distributed by Bear as their sheath knife, and the much coveted knife set containing the file and stone.

I don't know what knife was meant for the  nimrod quiver, if any.

I have  a pearson quiver with the knife sheath built in and I have used a variety of knives in it.  I would guess that Pearson and Bear had no specific knife in mind.  They simply made the sheath large enough two accomodate a multitude of blade choices.

Probably wrong...but just my thoughts.

The 648 fits nicely in my western quiver, but the nimrod definately takes a larger knife.

The Nimrod Quiver was introduced in 1955.

In 1955 and 1956 Bear did not show a sheath knife in their catalog... although you could buy a nice compass to strap on your bow or wrist.

Then...

The 1957 catalog offered a Western 648 in the Fred Bear Bowhunter's Kit for $9.95.

Don't you wish you had a whole box of them...

Really would like a bowhunter kit, but just cant seem to justify the cost.
So I guess any knife that will fit for the nimrod.

The Diamond Chonco Western was introduced in 1957 and was Bear's first quiver that was made to accept the Western 648.

The Round Chonco Western preceded the Diamond Chonco. I have never seen a Round Chonco Western  with a knife or file sheath and such a combination was not shown in the catalogs.

Ah yes,now I see the diamond/round concho difference. Good way to date the older westerns.

Tom - Just checked 6 Nimrods with build in sheaths and they are all pretty much the same. None will accommodate the Western 648.

Now, I just stumbled across an experimental Nimrod that I have always wondered about.

Guess what, the knife handle strap is much lower, and is the same distance from the pocket for the blade, same distance as a Diamond Chonco Western, and this Nimrod will accommodate a Western 648.

Doc - You are correct the knife was a seperate purchase from the Nimrod.

However, during the 1955-1959 lifespan of the Nimrod, I don't believe Bear offered a separate knife in those five catalogs, even though they did offer the 648 in the Bowhunter's Kit for the last 3 years of those 5 catalogs.

Well, I don't know if this will contribute to the thread or not, but here's mine...a not-so-nice example of the quiver with a Western I picked up that is a bit more beefy than the 648, I think.

I really like the knife and will bring it back to life before fall. This one is still a bit small in the blade, but the grip seems to fit perfectly to the quiver.  

And honestly, I think any bigger blade will cut that sheath right off the quiver because the contour of the quiver forces you to run the knife edge along the leather, I like to have the safety margin that I have with this knife.

As it is you have to be real careful to push the spine of the blade against that side of the sheath to make sure the blade doesn't contact leather and slice it to shreds.

It's not exactly the mightiest sheath for a hunting knife!

I don't know the knife model as it is not marked, but maybe the pics will help.

Your Nimrod is a later one that will accommodate the Western 648.

Until this evening, I never realized that there was a difference in the sheaths on Nimrods quivers. I have now found 7 here like Tom's, and only one that is like yours. That small of a sample size is really no indicator of the relative rarity. We may have to start a Nimrod Categorization thread to figure that one out... Just Joking.

I have had 6 nimrods, still have 2, none fit my 648's properly-handles all too short. The Puma Hunter's Friend fits perfectly.
Let me pass on a tip to prevent the knife blade cutting your sheath. Take a piece of the Teflon sheeting used to cover food for MW cooking and cut off a piece equal to the length and twice the width of your knife blade. Fold it in half and shove it into the knife sheath of a Nimrod or Western quiver with the open end of the folded Teflon away from the sharp part of the blade. Now you can actually use the sheath without fear of cutting it up.

Bjorn - Great idea to make an insert for the Nimrod and Western quivers.

That is the same principal that Fred used for making the inserts to go into the sheath for the Bowhunter's Kit. Of course back then Fred didn't use Teflon sheeting for microwave cooking, he used other materials, aluminum or a flexible fibrous material.
