Got to thinking, has anyone ever shot a  mako, or a great white with a bowfishing outfit?

I haven't read about anyone taking either of those species. The Great White is protected over most of if not all of its range now.

Ya i looked up some info on great white's and I think that is out of the question now. But as far as mako's I dont know. I think it would be awsome.

I like that he set up and shot it and then reeled it in with a fishing rod.  My dad, brother and I do that a lot for carp and it is very effective.  A Mako could run right out of the area with just a float attached.

A mako would be interesting (frightening) to shoot with a bow. If you've ever seen one go airborne, you know what I mean.  You can find em off the Tx coast in the gulf of Mexico. I would think any type of big fish bowfishing would be pretty dangerous....its rare but people do die in offshore fishing tourneys while trying to 'wire' big fish like marlin.  The fish is brought boatside w/ lots lots of strength still in reserve, the guy wiring the fish somehow gets caught up in the wire, fish does another run and takes the tangled up deckhand or fisherman overboard and into a deep dive.  Its sad but it does happen.

Ya, I I like doing crazy stuff like this. I would love to thump a 600lb mako with my longbow, then watch it strip line of my penn 9/0, and do sumersaults! It be awsome!!! I'm going to try and find a charter boat that will let me do it.

Mako, heaps of them around the NZ coast.
Go to the New Zealand bowhunters societys web site to see a few pic's.
Other sharks shot quite often around NZ include Bronze whalers,Seven gillers,Hammerheads, threshers,an about anything else that lives here and will come up a berly trail.
Great whites, havn't heard of any myself, but their now totaly protected so it shouldn't happen.
Winning or losing is not the important thing,,the important thing is how well you played the game.

Having been in the water with Mako's several times all I can say is "watch what you ask for, you might just get it". I saw on speared in the Philippines where we did our open water swims. It let the natives bring it in close the boat then jumped in with them, sunk the boat and scared the be-jeez out of the natives. Everyone got out ok and they got their spear back, but no shark.

I got to thinking and I wonder if anyone has ever shot a marlin? That would be awsome to! I like shark fishing, wich is what got me to thinking about it, but to get a marlin chasing some teasers behind a boat, about 5 yards out or so, and get it with a long bow, would be realy awsome!

Pokeanhope,Read Howard Hills "hunting the hard way".
It has a very good chapter on shooting marlin behind teasers, and "under water" shark hunting.

Realy? That is awsome! I had heard of him hunting sharks underwater, and it was video'd but cant find the footage, but I will deffinatly have to buy that book! No wonder he's my archery hero, he's did everything!

yea, there is even video of Howard shooting some marlins and sharks with the bow.
I think you can find those videos thru 3rivers.

The easy way to do all that is to spearfish.  Free divers have been killing all of those critters for almost as long as bow hunters have been around a speargun and mask fins and snorkle as trad as it gets.  No bang sticks allowed.

not sure mate. great whites are protected at the very least in australian waters. not sure about other places. don't know about makos.

teasers are just fish or chunks of meat used to bring a shark closer to the boat or bank. if you can get them feeding in your berley trail and then throw out a teaser on a string you can usually lure them closer.

i used this method to shoot an 8'2" tiger shark and a 7' 3 3/4" hammerhead

ozy clint - Very much enjoyed your sharking adventures and rig. Like you, have always wanted to bowfish for shark and someday plan too, likely (hopefully) off San Lucas, Mexico.

Apex Predator

You better buy a better reel.  A 600# Mako will burn your drag out quick on a Penn 9/0.  I've caught bunches of bigger Tigers on 12/0 Penns, and the drag lasts one fight, if that.  Makos are much more phenomenal fighters than Tigers.  Buy you a good lever drag reel.

what apex said. buy a lever drag reel. mine is a shimano TLD 15. with 5kg of drag pressure it handled the 8" tiger no worries. it didn't take much line off me it just took a while to bring it to the surface. not sure about makos but as apex says they must take bigger runs. i was expecting something that big to take lots of line off me but to my suprise it didn't. i needn't have bought 500m of line after all.
