Made a promise to myself *again* this year to not let the blackberries pass me by... seems like by the time I start scouting, all I can find are patches picked over by all the other animals who pay more attention to and more time in the woods than me.

Not this year, by golly.  I called Mom today for tips on making cobbler.  As a kid, we had a deal: if I picked enough (and didn't eat them all), then Mom would make the cobbler.  Seems like the picking was the hard part, judging by the amount of blood those stickers could draw.  Besides, Mom could whip up a cobbler easy as, er, pie.  Ahem, sorry.       Anyway, this is my first attempt - and I added some graham-cracker to the crust.  Wow, I feel all growed up.

A half gallon of Bryers Vanilla Ice cream would look pretty nice sitting next to that.

I went to my little spot this morning and found these...picked a whole bunch!

Then I worked, and then I went to the store and got TWO half-gallons of Breyer's vanilla. Then I went to my parking lot and picked some just-rained-on blackberries AND wineberries too!

I think I will make Wife-of-the-Year twice this week! Not a bad ploy when one's birfday is approaching!   :bigsmyl:

I've been picking them for a week or so now when I go on my morning walks! Got a bunch in the freezer now. I bought some sugar free vanilla ice cream, cooked the berries down with some Splenda added, and poured the hot berries over the ice cream! Only bummer is since my surgery I have to strain the seeds from any fruits so I didn't get to pick seeds from my teeth afterwards!LOL

Our kids were out picking red huckleberries and salmonberries just yesterday. We have blackberries growing wild in the backyard, which are a real nuicance. Been thinking of trying to remove the darn things and plant huckleberries instead.

Then again, I'm not known as someone who has a green thumb...

Bart... you ever use mulberries for baking?

I got a tree out back that drops those buggers like mad.... gotta pressure wash the driveway nearly every other day... and a when they bake onto the hood of my Jeep... well, that's nice, too!

Frank, Take my tree... please, B

Killy, dear, you might not make wife of the year twice this week, but you definitely got a shot at wife of the week twciew this year! (That was supposed to be, "twice this year", but I thought it was funny, so I left it. Move over Rsuty an' John, son o Glenn!)

Frank, Killdeer once made a coupla mulberry pies that'd knock yer socks off! Yum! It can be done, but mulberries are usually pretty mild. Guess it depends on the particular tree, how much rain, how much sun, quality o' the soil, etc..

Bart, you gonna eat that? How 'bout that fish layin' there on the stove next to it?...

Yum. You folks have got me thinking that I really need to learn to cook a berry cobbler in a dutch oven so I can have some at my hunting camp this fall.
