how does the arrow flight change between the two and what are the advantages and disadvantages of both

Shooting 3 under gave me a more consistant anchor. You may have to do a little tuning for arrow flight but not much.

What type of shooter are you instinktive gap or other Ive tried moveing my knock point up and down still not getting good flight. sorry about my spelling

I agree with DBin, I switched to 3 under because I anchor a bit low, my thumb knuckle to the rear of my jaw bone, so it got the arrow up a little closer to my eye, although it still is further  below those who anchor their index finger to the corner of their mouth or eye tooth.

I shoot completly instictive, I pick a tiny spot on the target and consentrate on it, that being said, I also let the tip of the arrow into my site picture but in no way use it as a reference point in conjuction to the spot I am trying to hit. I just think by letting the arrow tip in that my subconsious mind will program itself in telling me where to hold depending on my distance, I also do not pay any attention to what yardage I am at, I let my internal computer take care of all of that.

I have heard more then once that shooting 3 under is more forgiving as there is less chance of arrow torque on the nock when using split finger, don't take my word for that, just something I have heard alot of shooters say. DK.

I'm not one who's qualified to give advice, but for what it's worth......I tried the 1 finger over and 2 under until I was ready to quit and then switched to a modified Apache style with 2 fingers under, no 3rd finger involved. I was having a real bad time torquing the arrow when I tried to pinch it in between my index finger and middle finger.
One more thing that helped me with shooting completely under was to put a few eliminator buttons on my string (the little rubber ones) and slide one up against the bottom of my arrow nock to keep my finger tab from contacting the arrow nock when I release. So I've got a hard nock above the arrow, and a rubber button below it.
It really helped me get a much cleaner release. I also noticed that when I started drawing under the arrow that my bow liked the arrow tuned a tad bit nock high and that helped even out the keel.
Of course that could just be my bow, but it's worth a try.

There are too many great shooters that shoot both ways to say that there are significant advantages to one or the other. I'd personally get pretty red in the face trying to tell the likes of Ron LaClaire, Terry Green, or Mr. Howard Hill that 3 under was superior.  That said I shoot 3 under for the same reasons as DBin and Ncsa...

both work equally well, shooters choice.

I've used split for years and seem to do real well especially when shooting longer distance.  If all I did was shorter range stuff say 25 yards or less three under seems to group a bit tighter.

I shot split since the early 70s switched last Feburary after reading many post on this site and have become more consistant.

I'm a 3 fingers under shooter and it just works better for me. Been shooting trad since 1963.

Used to shoot split was having troubles with shooting high all the time.  Switching to 3 under seemed to fix that..


Come to think of it now I'm always shooting low....

I shoot 3-under. Found if you shoot a lot, it is a bit more forgiveing on the fingers.

I switched to 3 under recently & had a great improvement  instantly, it brought the arrow closer to my eye & I just like looking down the arrow shaft.

I started shooting three under with my first trad bow but have now swapped to split finger it is better for me as a gap shooter your piont on is further out makeing the longer shots easier

I have always shot split finger one over two under with a glove. I just switched to a split two finger (one over & one under) tab and get a much better release.

Started off in 1970 with split fingers, tab.
Evolved into compounds with mechanical release.
Too much contraption so returned to traditional and went to three under.
Two years ago I viewed Scott Antczak's video on traditional shooting and went to two under.  Love it. Cleanest release I have experienced.

I also shoot instinctive.  Focus on small spot.  Aware of arrow in my peripheral vision. Index finger to corner of mouth, back tension till she flies.
