I haven't shot one in about three years, at least.  I think the last one I shot I ended up with something around 220-230?  There is a guy named Connie Smith who shoots gap from the compound stakes, and he will often shoot 280's from there.  He does not do nearly as well on short targets, due to his gap.  I've not seen anyone shoot 250 instinctive.  Paul.

Here is the top four guys in our trad league. Granted our indoor 3D range is 30 yards and less.

I just shot a 3d round at a local indoor range. It is mostly set up for compounds so I didn't shoot from the official spots but  I figure my average shot was about 20 yards. I did a 218 with 11 10 8 5 scoring (one zero).  For my first time shooting 3d I thought that wasn't half bad.

Most of the local shoots around here also score center 12's. With that in mind, on a 30-target course, it will usually take a 270+ to win. But then again, that all depends on the course. I remember a 30-target MAC qualifier 3D in Janesville, WI back in 2003 where the furthest target was an elk around 20 yards. The top two recurve scores were 312 and 304.

i,m curious does traditional shoot at the same stakes as compounds, I shot only my second one today and shot the same stakes as compounds some shots were in the 50 yard range. I felt bad shooting 275.

dan ferguson

Type error 175 instead of 275 sorry for the mistake, I wish I could shoot 275 from compound distance with 20 mile an hour wind.

The bad thing about 3-D is that you can't really compare one shoot to another. There are way to many variables out there on the courses.

Courses differ. The only good way to find out if your score is good to is to compare it to what top shooters shot on that same course.
Once you have enough experience shooting 3D you can usually guess what score its going to take to be in the top after you have shot the course.

Taiga Recurve

If you can take your total score and divide by the total number of targets and come up with the number that represents any of the vital rings, than that is a good score. Most 3D shoots that I have shot in have the scoring rings as follows 8, 10, 12 and 5 for a body shot. Exmaple if you shot a score of 285 for 30 targets your average target score is a 9.5. Meaning you averaged mostly vital shots, if your average target score was lower than a 8 (total score of 230 or less) your shooting needs some work.

when I return with all my arrows. I only average 190, but........i don't care so much for score. I look for a "Kill" shot on every target. I don't care where teh score rings are since some of the targets are quartering, elevated, below me, etc.... I just try to hit it as if it were a live animal and take whatever score the rings give me.

At this years Alabama state shoot it took 90% to place in recurve class.

I think anything over 250 is very good.  Anything over 260 is outstanding and anything over 270 is world class shooting on 3D.

If you average over 240 in your 3D shoots, you're going to be the local club shooting expert and may be able to hold your own at the IBO triple crown shoots on good days.

Mark Hedges

Lately I have been averaging about 240.  I think anything over 240 is good, 250 very good, and 260 (which I haven't done yet) is excellent.

My personal best is a 40 target 3d shoot where I shot a 347/400.

We have several shooters at our Club that regualrly shoot in the 270s and higher. It seems that some people are simply not interested in shooting in National Competitions. Too stressful, I guess.

Cost of travel and other expenses often play into those decisions to attend National level competitions also  ;)

On a 30 target course I average 220 to 230, on a 35 target range 250 to 265.

If I can average 9 or more points per target...I feel I've had a good day.

Very True Ray. Especially with the high gas prices and the poor economy. I think that people may be staying closer to home this year.
