I'm trying to get a new recurve to shoot but am having some trouble. I've done lots of tuning over the years but never run into this problem.

No matter where I locate the nocking point the arrow shoots nock high. (Bare shaft and paper test)

The interesting part happened today. I used to shoot 3 under but not any more. So out of desperation I switched from split fingers to 3 under and most of the nock high went away.

What's happening here????

Try adding another nock below the arrow. Ken Beck says that some peoples release is so that getting all of nock high out is hard to do.Adding another knock below the arrow will somtimes cure the problem.

I am not that experienced but your thread made a few questions go through my head.

What kind of bow is it and at what dimension is the nock set at now? Does the bow's manufacture have a suggested dimension for the nock set?

By any chance, when you are shooting split fingered, are you shooting with a heavy third finger? High elbow? Torque the string?

I am just throwing some thoughts out.

I had a Hoyt Gamemaster that did that when I would shoot off the shelf; I couldn't get rid of the nock high.  When I shot off the elevated rest, it tuned fine.  I finally decided that the way it was tillered, it couldn't be tuned to shoot off the shelf.  Since I really didn't want to shoot off an elevated rest, I finally sold the bow.

If you want to, you could stick on a cheap flipper rest and see what happens, or just build up the shelf 1/4" or so.  At least then you would either know if you had the same problem I did or if it was something else.

See if there is a difference between using a high wrist and heeling the bow.

    You hit the nail on the head. If a bow is tillered for three under, and you switch you will have tuning issues.  The reverse is also true. I have seen some extremely high and low nock sets that worked on those bows.  It makes a difference.  I believe that a lot of problems people have in this area are directly related to two issues.  Bow tillered to be shot three under, or split when being shot the opposite, and nocks being too tight on the string.
