I've noticed that there is a wide variation in the thickness and width of the quills in a batch of feathers.

Sometimes they are narrow and thick or thin and wide or visa versa.

Is there a way to trim these up for more consistency?

Thanks,
Allen

if you look at a full length the quill starts wide on one end and taper to a point on the other...the width of the quill of your fletch is based on the where they chopped it out of the full length...if your concerned about it..id probably just match the thickness up between feathers before  fletching...steve

I have noticed the same thing. I use the Great Northern feather grinding system. It will make all your feathers the same width and same thickness.

That is one of the differences you will find between quality feathers and the cheep ones, Feathers do taper from one end to the other, but quill thickness is controled by the grinder. The people that sell cheep feathers know what there product is worth.

aromakr,

I've noticed that Tru Flight seems a little better than the others, but not by a wide margin.  Also, I haven't used a lot of them, so I may have just lucked into a good batch.

Is there another brand or source that is more consistent?
Thanks,
Allen

Allen:
My choice is True Flight, they have been in the business the longest and in my opinion do the best job. Keep in mind these are done on high speed machines and will not be as even as you would do them yourself one feather at a time.
