Thanks for the post Terry. Its always good to see the masters at work. By the way, just how far was that porker?

I have a LOOONG way to go before I play like Terry.  Awe inspiring by the way.

Isn't the whole point to have a relaxed forward arm?  I realize the muscles are working during the draw, but when I cant my bow at a relaxed/unconscious angle I hit closer to where I aimed.

I like canting because it is the natural method of pointing. Think about it, if you extend your hand to shake someone's hand, the hand naturally wants to twist inward approx. 10 degrees. If you point in a relaxed method, the way you should shoot, you will see that with the index finger extended, the hand rolls inward 15 degrees or more. The more naturally you hold your bow, point your bow, the more natural the shot, and the better you will learn to become one with your bow.

I can't argue with the fact that I hate to see bow and arrow in my plane of vision when I am shooting, and canting gets that garbage out of the way.

When I first started shooting stick bows back in the 60's, darn near everyone was shooting with a vertical hold. I shot that way until 88, then I started canting, and started shooting better than ever. I shoot my longbows and recurves that way, and heck event the short time I shot compounds I  shot them that way too!  For me, it is the only way to fly......

I used to cant the bow but I got tired of the inconsistency in my shooting. I just could not make it work for me.

Holding the bow vertical is more consistent with me.

To answer the original question: yes, you can shoot longbows vertically. I even shoot my selfbows vertical, and they have very small shelves. I start off my draw slightly canted, flow into a vertical hold, and release.

Terry,

How do you keep the arrow on the shelf when you reverse cant? Mine wants to drop off if I reverse cant more than a few degrees.
