Guys, for the past 2 years, I have been anchoring on a K-9 tooth with my middle finger shooting 3 under.  But the string smacks my lip a tad, and I look like I got a sore lip after shooting.  

Trying to come up with maybe a better anchor.  Maybe start using my cheekbone?

Actually, I shoot a glove mostly.  A damascus.  But want a thicker glove.  I sometimes do shoot a tab, but can't remember which tore my lip up more.

I was gonna suggest that it was the tab beating your lips to a pulp. Use to have that happen if I had the wrong style tab and it's pretty irritating.

Not sure what may be happening now.

Not to take over the thread, but I shoot three under as well and use a tab and anchor on my cheekbone with my index finger.  The past several months my cheek has taken a beating......and it is pretty irritating.  Any advice?

I get the feeling that you folks might be turning your head into your string a little.  It can happen over time.  Before you draw, try turning your head toward the target, then bring the bow string to your anchor point.

I use a double anchor point, my thumb behind my jaw and the cock feather touching my nose. It has seemed to have improved my shooting consistancy quite a bit. BTW, I do shoot three under with a damacus glove.

Orion, I do turn my head alot.  Reason is, I am extremely left eye dominant, and use my left eye to shoot mostly.

You shoot right handed and are left eye dominant?  I think that is the problem.  You may be trying to bring your left eye over the arrow by turning your face into the string.  There are two solutions to cross-dominance.  One is to learn to shoot lefty.  The other is to practice until your brain masters the problem.  If you chose the second solution you will need to concentrate on turning your head toward the target to avoid whacking your face with the string.  It's hard to shoot well when you are anticipating getting hurt.  If you put in enough quality time in practice you can master shooting with cross-dominance.  The same thing goes for learning to shoot lefty.  You might try both and see what works best for you.

Hurt my right eye in a chain saw incident when I was a kid.  Somehow, my mind switched my vison over and I have never trained it to go back.  Left handed seems out of the question.  I sometimes force my right eye to make a shot.  But its not natural.

Starkman... getting away from the face beating may be as simple as trying a different style of tab...there are some styles I just can't use.

This is the style I use without the face slapping problem.

 

Thanks Charlie.  I've been using a thick calf hair tab and considered changing to a glove or cordovan tab.
