Was walking to my first stand looking down the rows of almonds. Spotted a black ball way out there. Put the binochs too my peepers and sure nuff a napping coyote. Wind was right , so I started my sneak. I only needed to close 300+ yards to get a shot. After maybe 25 -30 minutes I 'm about 60-70 yards away. And he's not sleeping his head is up but looking away from me. He stands up and stretches and starts to walk away from me. I'm sitting there thinking now what. Reach for a call !$#@^& They are in the truck.

He still dose not know I'm here So I decide if I can get closer buy following him hoping he might start digging or anything so I can get a shot at him. Dumb idea. Followed him out of that orchard and half way across another orchard. I now know that a short stubby gnome Has a really hard time keeping up with a walking coyote. Gave up and walked the mile back to my truck.

Wait there's more. Next two stands nothing. On the fourth stand doing my supper chicken. Had two come burning in and run right past me ' no shot.

Was walking to my next stand and spotted another black spot maybe two hundred yards out, Started my sneak. But made sure I had some calls with me. Sneak went too easy .

I get to forty yards from him and he's out cold. Get to 18- 20 pull back and I see another coyote running away in back of the one I was sneaking up on . Look back at the first one and he's up and running also. Shot any way ,only was 20 yards short.

Last stand of the day. Was doing some dog death screams. Spotted one sneaking in about a hundred yards out . It was keeping the row of almonds between him and me, only could bits of him between the trees as he passed them . He gets to thirty and steps out into the open and starts stalking my dancing rat . I have the bow pointed at him ,telling my self the shoulder not his eyes . Five more feet and he's mine. Two more feet. He jumps in the air and turns inside out breaking the sound barrier Getting out of there.

No fur today but sure was fun. Getting closer.

I have a couple of buddies telling my to start using my varmit rifles again, they just don't get it.

You probably mentioned it in some of your posts from the past but are there a lot of rodents in that area due to the Almonds? Just wonder why that area holds the hounds like it does. Good stuff and keep at it!

This year I called three coyotes and one big kitty with a fawn bleat. I was calling to get a large buck to cross an open bottom grass area, he must have been deaf. We get a chorus every evening, sometimes they all seem to be on one general slope other times they are scattered all around us. If the fur price would go up to the levels they were at 30 years ago, we would not have to race to beat the coyotes to the deer we shoot. I had one a couple of years back, meet us in an open alfalfa. He was directly downwind while we were dragging out my buck. At 40 yards he first sat, then walked a semi circle around, got on our trail and went straight for the gut pile.
