First time crester here...Jig gets here on Thursday. What is yalls favorite paint and brushes to use? Also and tips or advice for a beginner would be much appreciated!

I know there are some cresters out there dying to help a newbie! lol

I use Bohning paints for my crown dip on aluminum or carbons and Odds N Ends, Shortcuts or Testors enamels for my cresting.  I use Lost Nation stains for my woodies and the same paints with a seal of Helmsman Spar Urethane.

Brushes are whatever I have.  Typically I order a pack of different sizes from online craft stores.

I use all bohning lacquers for my dips ( nothing stronger) and some cresting. A quality testor enamel paint for more cresting. Than a water based poly for a coat or 2. True north makes good stuff to but it's expensive.

Lowes Vaspar (?) spraypaint for the cap and Testors for the cresting.

Once I started doing my own arrows I started making a LOT of arrows. Enjoy!!

For wood shafts I use Profin to seal  the shaft . dipped 2 coats light steel wool between coats, then crest with Testors Acrylic and Model Master Acryl  that you can get at hobby lobby.  let  dry 24 hrs then dip another coat of Profin. seals crest and makes the crest really  stand out. Makes great looking arrows.

Been using testers enamels for decades now.

1.  Make sure the paint is not too thick.
2.  Use as fine a brush with as long bristles as you can find.

I use createx airbrush paint for cresting and dipping. I buy a big 16 oz bottle of white and thin it with 3/4 bottle of water and use that to cap dip. It is super bright white.

Then I either go over that with a transparent or fluorescent createx paint thinned the same way if I want a different cap color.

When I crest I use createx paint without thinning and it works great.

I finish my arrows with varathane poly floor finish and fletch with fletch tite platinum

One more thing is you can paint and crest your arrows with just about any kind of paint out there. But from my experience they are not all created equal. When I spends hours building a set  I want them to last. That's why I use lacquers.

There are many different paints to choose from.When I made my wood arrows I used all Bohning products,just what I started with.What I used for my cresting was an automotive pin stripping brush.I used it for thin crest lines to wide cresting.One brush to do all your cresting.For my crown dips I always dipped one coat of white first,made the top coat brighter like your red,yellow,green and orange.
