I have recently hurt my lower back.  Shooting the bow doesnt bother me, however, stringing the bow with my stringer does hurt.

I was just wondering if anyone has a idea for a bow press for a longbow that would enable me to string my longbow?  I am rapidly approaching the golden years and I just dont have the strength that I used to have.   Thank you for any replies..chuck

Have someone string it for you, then leave it that way. It won't hurt a glass backed bow, especially if you're shooting often.

if it is glass backed leave it strung as long as it doesnt get as hot as the hot box you should be ok

I have the same problem. I made a stringer on a 4X4 post, by cutting a handle shape in a 2X6 leaving one side longer then the other, and bolting it to the post, then at the bottom, I just put in a lag bolt covered with rubber hose.
You just put the handle of your bow in the 2X6, and the tip on the bolt, and pull the top limb down to put the string on. Works great for me, and doesn't hurt my back.

Thanks for your response.  My fiberglass longbow I do keep strung most of the time when shooting a lot.  This particuliar case is I am making my first selfbow and need to string it repeatedly when I check the tiller.  

Thanks for that idea Archer1.  I was thinking about using my tiller tree and mounting a light crank hoist to it.  I have my tips long enough by using my long tillering string to pull a arc to put the string on it.  That might work for tillering the bow ok but for field use an idea such as your that could be mounted on my pickup would work to.

I have been playing with the idea of boat trailer rollers and so far that idea hasnt panned out very well.  chuck

I forgot to say that it isn't portable, but you gave me an idea, to make one that would go in a rease hitch, now that might work.

I also thought about mounting to boat roller guides to the bed of my pickup to use in the same manner that you describe...lots to think about right now...thanks for your idea too!..chuck

don't know how heavy your bow is, but I can string a fairly heavy bow lying down on the floor on my back... lower limb tip on a piece of padded furniture, upper limb tip with string loop in hand pushing up, other hand on handle pulling down.  Lazy man's way of push-pull method.

Ken thanks for the tip.  I have seen a lot of variations since I have posted this on other sites.  The imagination finds new ways to do the same trick of stringing the bow.
