I have been wanting my first longbow for a long time now.... the montana has always been on the top of my list!!
has anyone ever tried this longbow??

Which one are you talking about? The Bear or Whip?
I have both and they are great bows. The Bear is hard to beat for the money. Dan's Whip has the finest workmanship I have ever seen. Also, a great shooter. You should be able to get the Bear used for less than $200. Used Whip's are hard to find. This tells you something about how people hold on to them once they get one. Also, there are a lot fewer ones out there.

Dp,   Just got my Whip with the Bowbolt Takedown and I can't say enough about it and Dan. The Bow shoots so quiet and the workmanship is incredible. Dan is a true bowyer and a great person. I have owned quite a few Bows and this is the first time I felt like a Bow was being built for me, and by the Bowyer. If you have'nt already figured it out I am a fan of Dan and his Bows, you won't be sorry. Get the Whip..... Tu Compadres, Suty

Dp,  I owned a Grizzly but not the Montana. Sorry for the mixup. My Grizz was the first Trad Bow I owned. It was a good Bow and I was able to take many a Javie with it. I cannot imagine that the Montana would be anything but good. Dans' wesite is montanabows.com  I hope this helps, sorta.  Tu Compadres, Suty

I had a Bear Montana and liked it pretty well.  Like some others, I 'personalized' mine by reshaping the grip and adding a 'sure-grip'.   I braced mine a little lower than some, but by experimenting with the brace-height you can find what works best for you.  Also, trying a fast-flite string and a dacron string may provide you with a different feel with a preference of one type of a string over the another. I think the Montana is a good bow for the money and it's hard to go wrong with one(it doesn't seem like the prices drop too much on the auction site).   I have been thinking about getting another one and adding some skin-eeze(snake skins) to dress it up.  Another option is to try and find a used custom bow through the buy-and-sell, but depending on what you are looking for(style of longbow, length, draw weight, etc), you may have to wait a while to find the specs you want.   Overall, I'd say the Bear Montana is a real good choice, good luck.

I own a bear montana and love it. It is a great bow for the price.

I always hear good things about the Montana. I know it's not everything to everybody but it will serve you well and is one of the best for the money. If I were you I might run a WTB classified here and state exactly what specifications you would consider and see if someone has one that they want to sell. That way you may get a deal and be able to put the rest of the money toward "customizing" your bow or get new arrows.
Do or do not ... there is no "try"

I had one a while ago, and I think it's one of the most well kept secrets out there. They are great bows for the money, and I don't think you'll be sorry if you buy one. Even the new ones aren't very expensive, and used ones come up fairly frequently.

Good luck!
