Made up three dozen of these in Douglas fir for the 2014 JLMBH and, while not up to some of the preceding examples, did good service and of five shots in two foot of snow I recovered all five shafts with minimal searching!    

 

 

And some replacement whitetail Douglas fir arrows - two dozen of this pattern eventually.

My usual stains, leather dyes and permanent markers under MinWax poly.  No paints or lacquers.  Have also become a full convert to Bohning fletch tape.

JB74nola - That's a bold venture starting out with a double crown.  And a marble dip at that.         Nice work!

ALL the arrows here show what fun can be had adding a personal touch to a practical object.  

I hand-taper the last 12" and crown/crest even my stump and bunny arrows.  You'll only get so many opportunities to launch an arrow in the outdoors.  Make them all your best shot.

Ty very much Charlie, I really enjoyed building them. I owe the how to section and all the shining examples here everything. I may try feather splicing on my next 6. I need a few more tools first tho, so it might have to wait. Those are gorgeous mike! Have you ever tried working with purple heart footings?

Yes I have done purpleheart.  There was acrually a 4th one to this set that was made of purpleheart, but it didn't measure up to these 3, so it got tested again and again against a tree in the back yard with a blunt on the front.  Took 5 ****s before it gave up the ghost.  I've used just about every type of wood I could get my hands on to experiment with.  So far my favorite is Macassar Ebony.

It definitely makes a pretty poker!     a footing jig may be in my not too distant future as well! When I was growing up, my family had a large furniture company in Chicago, and I've been building houses for 20 years. Wood is in my blood and now tradtional archery is in my heart, can't wait to see where it all takes me!

Man o man......my arrows look like Tomato stakes compared to some of these....even some of the first attempts. But still fun to make and launch down range, and then hit the mark!!

An accurate tomato stake trumps my pretty toothpicks shot from my beginners hands IMO. Hard to tell if mine fly true when I'm all over the target when shooting further than 15 yards  :p

I have just started making my own woodies and am wondering how you put the "names" on your arrows. Done a lot of reading this winter here on the trad gang site. Have acquired cresting machine,dip tubes, paint, stain, sealer but the method to name my creations has not yet been discovered. How do you get such clear writing on your arrow shafts.

Ron, it's all in the fun! My crestings look like a child did them but I did it without the aid of a cresting machine (I just hand spun the shafts between two books and held my brush as still as possible).

Keep working at 'em and with time and effort you too will be making works of art.
