Did you ever see an infection like this before? It ran down from the spine to even under the front legs. Game and fish said they never saw enything like this before. They took it to have it checked out. They said it may have resulted from a fight. Smelled terrible!
Sad to loose all that meat. Haven't heard back from them yet as to the results.

Stone Knife

The Night Stalker

I seen this plenty of times. Usually in humans. It don't look all that bad to me. Did it involve any of the internal organs or was it all at the surface. The smell is a bad sign. Certain types of bacteria have an odor. He would of probably heeled eventually though. Looks like necretizing fasciaitis in deer.

If they would have issued a new tag I would have to give up the head and rack. Not much time left in the season so I will wait for next year. Hard to get a shot at mule deer out here so we will have the head mounted. Maybe next year? When you get my age everthing is iceing on the cake!

Never heard of that? Hope it is not catchy!
It was all around the rib cage and down to the glands under the front leggs. smelled like an absess. Cut into the meat on the back strip area and the meat looked black and dried out, sort of dead?

Killdeer

Yeesh! I bet you washed that knife real good!

Yum ... chili meat! Cook it long enough, and you can eat anything. Not me, but you.

Just rub some salt in it and put it on the grill.  Let me know how it turns out.  If I don't hear back from you I'll take that as a negative reply.  :goldtooth:

It's called fasciitis.  It is an infection than runs along the fascia or sinew of the muscle.  It's a horrible thing in people, suspect it's not much better in critters.  You probably did that guy a favor.

Ringneck

My hunting partner shot one last year that had a similar looking infection on the backstrap. It was only about the size of a baseball on this deer though.

Chortdraw

Killdeer, you bet we washed everything.
As for putting it on the grill, you should have smelled that thing!!!! By the time we had the thing skinned, cooking any of the meat was the farthest thing from our minds.

Thanks for the info Fasciitis. I will look that up and read about it.

Boy, I'm not in the habit of using gloves when I clean animals, but that really makes me rethink my position. You really did that poor creature a favor, I am guessing father winter would have finished him off if you didn't his number had been pulled. Glad you got some nice antlers to look at; they can remind you of how lucky you are to not be inflicted with his illness.
