The question has been generated by hearing some talk about bow stringers being different between recure and longbow. I made one to string my new longbow with, however, when I get a lot of pressure on it I just feel that it wants to slip off. It hasnt as yet. So, I want opinions on what to use for a longbow. Home made is fine.  Thanks...chuck

I have never used a stringer on a longbow, do the pust pull method. But on a recurve.. thats a diffrent story. dont see why a cup on both end style stringer wouldnt work though..

I've had one slip off under a lot of pressure and the limb struck me. Luckily nothing serious.  I use a Selway or push/pull now.

If your stringer is slipping off you are not using it right. The cups will pull tighter when pressure is applied. I have a friend who almost lost an eye with the push pull method. So a stringer is the safe way.

Neet makes one with a long leather pouch on the bottom end and a small leather pocket at the top that works well for me. Be careful with the size of the pocket on some stringers as some slip down over the string groove and are useless. Saw one made of a strap that looks like it would work well.

I'd have to disagree with you there Crooked Stic.  I know how to properly use a stringer, and the one I have with two leather cups (same size on both ends) that was labled "Longbow / Recurve stringer" on the package, doesn't work worth a hoot on my longbow.  Worked just fine on my recurve, but the cups are small, and the tips of my longbow just slid right out of the cup, and it sounded like I had just dry fired my bow.  Luckily, no damage was visually present, and everything has been ok so far - but after two "close calls", and then finally that incident, I bought a Selway Longbow stringer.  I should have just bought one after the first "close call".

All the best,
Glenn
If at first you don't succeed.... buy newer / better equipment!

in my experience the push /pull is pretty safe with a longbow, a recurve can get your eye/face and I do know a man who lost a eye years ago doung this with a recurve..nice TEX Mex !

I use a superstringer that thunderhorn sells.  It is the best I've used so far for a longbow.  IMO of course.

Thanks for the replys.  There are a few options to look at now.  My stringers that I made work ok on the recurve but on the longbow with the limbs bent forward of the riser I get the feeling that the short end wants to slip off because of the angle.  It hasnt--maybe its ok....I will look at all the options...thanks

If Ya Value Your Eyeballs as I Value Mine, I use a Stringer. I have Tried the Push-Pull on my LongBow and it works Fine, but I say  "Why Take   The Chance?"   :scared:   I understand that its Just another thing to Haul in the Truck, but they fold up and Fit in My OverFilled Glove Compartment/Truck ToolBox!      :archer:
