Any of you great knifesmiths out there ever use steel cable to forge knives from. I remember reading somewhere that steel cable can be used to forge Damascus steel.

I've never used it myself, but very good quality damascus can be forged frm steel cable. Froma what I've learnt, the main thing to remember is to make ABOLUTELY sure that the cable is scrupulously clean, otherwise it won't weld properly. Use plenty of Borax for temp checking too.

It can, I've seen some very nice blades made from cable. The cable has to be cut to length, disassembled, any rope or fiber inside removed, cleaned reassembled and the ends welded together. Then you can start!

I own a couple of his knives...the best looking damascus I've seen (I have a san mai and a cable)...incredible craftsman.
