Just out of interest really, what kinda noise do the commonly used predator calls make? Are they all simulations of wounded rabbits, or do they differ at all?

I just posted on coyote hunting. all critter calls I ever used sound like screaming rabbits or some thing. I do have a yote call as well that makes all kinds of whines and bay type calls.

In spring and early summer a fawn in distress can work magic, just watch out for a mad doe as they can be somewhat intimidating.

Burnham Brothers has a bird in distress coon call that is a killer for bobcats. To use it correctly you have to "thrill" your tongue against the roof of your mouth when you blow into the call. It was designed to imitate a crippled shore bird and to attract coons but it's hell on tabby's.

I picked up a pocket sized electronic caller for $19.98 at Dicks Sporting Goods.(I don't have it handy, but I will post the manufacturer later)

I makes several calls.....mouse in distress,rabbit in distress,"baby" rabbit in distress,fawn in distress,and a coyote howl.

It works pretty good.....

Rabbit in distress...Burnham Brothers Long and short range calls. They also offer birds in distress also, great for raccoons. Rabbit in distress works on Fox, Coyote the best.

Here's a link to a site I found that you can download some free calls and burn to a CD.

Predator or fur calling is my big passion. Anyway you basically have two different types of calls and they sometimes overlap. The food/distress calls and social calls. The food/distress calls run a wide range of mouse squeeks, screaming rabbits, wounded birds and the crying of the young. While social calls are usually howls, woofs, mating sounds & such. All have their purposes and their pluses depending on what critters that you are targeting. Fox & lynx tend to be a little more particular then coyote. Yotes come to almost anything where as wolf seem respond better to social calling then food/distress calls which bears prefer.

rabbit in distress works great however i like a bird in distress alot better, just seem to have better luck with it. the common turkey call also works well for coyotes this time of the year just use alot of loud yelps.

Try allpredatorcalls.com   All sorts of calls, tapes, etc. I bought a coon fight cassette and the first time I tried it in my backyard I had coons come to it in less than ten minutes.

i would suggest a call like the Tally Ho which can produce a variety of sounds. there are also many custom call makers out there and they don't just alot to have one made.

I have an electronic caller, woodpecker and squealing bird work good for fox. Grey fox pup tape is killer on grey fox, they just about run you over with that one. Rabbit distress works good also some of the tapes i have mix different sounds together. But the most important call is the little hand held squeaker, when they hang up in site or out of site the squeaker works good to bring them in range.

in the spring, summer, and early fall the distress calls work well. for bobcats and lions, the yellowhammer woodpecker distress is awesome! we have called in a ton of bears when elk hunting using calf sounds. this time of the year coyotes are starting to breed, challenge calls as well as K-9 pup distress calls work like a charm. here is my nephew and i last weekend testing a new howler/k-9 distress call that he made. he got a little "dog fever" and missed at about 80 yards so i had to help him out LOL!

I've had good success on foxes with rabbit in distress calls.  Never had one come in when I had my bow, but I have shot a bundle with my rifle.
