Arrow Dipping

I haven't been able to get the right consistency of Bohning paint while dipping my arrows. The dip seems to break off in pieces. Has anyone had any luck in using automotive spray laquer for their arrows? I read sometime ago that it makes an acceptable dip. It certainly would smell a lot less and the wife wouldn't keep asking about the awful smell in the garage.

Bohning paint works fine for dipping......it sounds like you are having a cross contamination problem..........auto paint works, but the smell can be a problem too.
I use water based polyacrylic dip--non flammable and no smell. Won't melt pvc dip tubes, and dries to a very durable finish. Talk to Ted at Raptorarchery.com

What kind of arrow are you trying to dip, I have had trouble getting it to stick to certain carbon arrows.

I use bohning for dipping, and had to get the bohning thinner to thin it out. Works fine now. Are you cleaning the Shafts before dipping? I dont mean offense, but I didnt do it the first few sets of arrows....  :D  Now I use Denatured alcohol before I dip.

What Bjorn and Ishi said. I shoot alums. and haven't had a problem in years except when I accidentally used a standard lacquer thinner. I used auto lacquers and other finishes but nothing held up as well as Bohning when I burned the fletching. I don't know about other materials but the Fletch Lac doesn't work well on Grizzly Stiks and according to Ed at ABC tape is about all that does.Good luck,

I use a Good Spray Paint, Taping & Papering off the Front of the Arrow, Get a Good Looking Arrow color, and I dip my Woodies in Minwax Poly Water Based Sealent on them. After everything is GOOD & Dry, I use some Johnsons or Good Old Turtle Wax to make the Arrows Slicker than Owl Snot on Linoleum!!

I use DEFT spray lacquer, 2-4 coats, after dry I then smooth with #0000 steel wool (#0000 steel wool between coats, as well). The only times I have problems with arrows sticking in target butts is when those butts have glue in them. Fibers from compressed cardboard butts will stick, sometimes, but they are easily removed.

I haven't been able to afford any "real" arrow dips or the needed equipment...

I just dipped 1 1/2 doz cedars yesterday  ............... Bohning Fletchlac (white) ............. still works fine ,like always  ............. BTW ....... I have always used standard lacquer thinner , never had a problem with that ........... I usually dip twice ( 2 coats )

you can use MEK mythel ethel ketone(sp?) from the hardware store, it's the same as the bohning brand only alot cheaper. also, i use bohnings shaft cleaner before dipping.
