Bear size

I have a bear hunt coming up and would like to make a carboard cut out for practice. Anybody have the measurements for an average size blackbear? Body length, depth,how high at the shoulder etc.

The one I shot this spring was 7'4" paw to paw so I guess thats 76" divided by 2 means he was about 38" tall at the shoulder.  Not exact science, but ballpark enough I hope.  Nose to tail measurement was 74" and live weight was about #375-400.

Don't aim to low,allow for the hair that hanging below the animal. Pick your alingment and then shoot center of animal.

Where are you going SL?  Just got back in early June and had a blast.  I shot a ton from a treestand at a 3D. I need to remember what type of  target I  used   because it was almost the perfect size.

The McKenzie black bear is supposed to be about the size of 100-125# bear.  That's what I shoot be for going bear hunting cause it has good anatomy proportions except visualized that leg moving forward to open up the chest.  That would be a start for makin' one...Doc

If you check on McKenzie targets it may give you some general dimensions. Good luck, I love bear hunting and hope to go again in the future.

A 55 gallon drum on it's side gives you a good approximation of a decent size bear as shown above, so you could base your target on that.

My brother and I are heading up to Ontario.The town is called Missanbie Canada. First week in September. Should be a good time.I think a good life size target would be great for practice and size recognition. I appreciate any help.

Like tippit said, the McKenzie black bear target is a good target to practice on. I practice on one before every black bear hunt. Get good on that one, and when that giant comes into your bait, a dbl lung shot will be no problem.
