Western Larch Question

Does anyone here shoot western larch? Paradox archery has a great price on them and I would like to try some for my selfbow. Any suggestions?

They're exactly like douglas fir in every way, if you've ever used that. Douglas fir and western larch are probably the most rugged of the softwood arrow shafts, with a straightness that at least rivals that of the venerable P.O.C. It's weight also runs a fair bit heavier, too. IMO, it's a great choice for those insisting on absolute straightness, but also wanting more weight and ruggedness.

John I really like Larch. It is a little heavier than fir, it makes a heavy tough arrow. I have been shooting them for over 10 years that should say something.

John I bought several hundred when 3 Rivers carried them but the best I have bought is from http://www.proaxis.com/~dougknight/index.html/. These are expensive but without a doubt the best shafts I have ever seen bar none. Doug got out of the business for a while and is just getting back to making shafts. I have never tried Pardox so I can't say anything about them. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link. There's a ton of info in the education part of that site. Very helpfull understanding why some blocks make arrows and some make sticks for the garden.

I plane my own and just finished some larch, they look good so I'm hoping they fly.

I'm glad to know where I can get some more. I had bought a couple dozen when 3 Rivers had them, and I think I might have 2 or 3 left - shot them for several years; they are tough. Mine made up to about a 650 grain arrow 29" long including a Zwickey Delta 2-blade.

Looks like Doug Knight knows what he is doing. I will be saving some $$ for a dozen of these shafts.

I was just looking back at Doug's page and noticed that he only carries Douglas Fir. Do you know if he still carries the larch?

John I think they specialize in Douglas Fir but also have larch. Send Doug an email to see if they have any larch. If he doesn't have any, I am sure he would have some heavy fir. Looking at the shafts I can't tell larch from fir. I usually buy shafts by the hundreds (which are not weighed) so I buy larch since it is normally heavier.
