I'm an archery hunter, but am just shopping for a traditional bow. I've shot compound for many years, but in the '70's, I shot a Herters recurve. I have renewed interest in traditional archery and don't know what I want yet. I know this opens up a whole can of beans, as to recurve, long bow, flat bow, etc. and I know that everyone has their preferences and opinions. I'm fortunate enough to have friends that are going to allow me to try their bows out and see which direction I'll be going!

I've looked over the site and am impressed with the hints, how-to's, etc. I like the idea of the "positivity" (if that's a word) and look forward to sharing stories and asking questions!

Thanks for reading/listening!

Welcome! Good luck on your quest.I shot recurves then recurves and hybrid longbows now just hybrids.IMPO easy to shoot, good speed and quiet very quiet.

You're "new" and were shooting Herter's in the '70s ... ho, ho! I'm old, and can remember when Herter's was the only catalog-order bow available.

Anyhow ... welcome. In general, for most people, recurves are friendlier than longbows. However, in recent years we have been given the "hybrid" longbow, which combines the best of the two. With more than a half-century of trad shooting under my belt (size 34!), I suggest you forget pure longbows for the nonce and shoot both recurves and hybrid longbows, a.k.a. "reflex-deflex" longbows. If you're patient, you can find a great used bow in either category for a steal. Wheelie bows are for rifle hunters who want the advantages of archery season. Trad bows are for the most serious hunters evolution has ever produced. It's far more attitude than equipment. Welcome.

bentpole: oops!

Forgive my ignorance, but what is IMPO?

Glad to have you aboard, lots of different opinions on bow type and brand. I have both longbows and recurves they both have there good and bad points the long bows are more fun to shoot. I love my Howard Hill bows!
