Just got back from a fantastic walk in a Parke Co. In. woods.Killed at least a dozen mayapples with my A.S. Sequoia longbow ,had 4 turkeys gobbling at 12:30 pm ,one walked 14 yds. from me and found two pockets of black morel mushrooms.Life doesn't get any better than this, well I could hit the lottery and do this every day.24 degrees this morning in w.central In. How was your day?

I worked in the yard, shot at a foam target and drove over to look at some land to hopefully hunt on. Doesn't sound as good as your day. I do have a nice spot picked out for Saturday morn if I can get the birds in there it will be a great weekend!

Oh how I miss Parke county! born and raised there and don't get to spend near enough time over that way anymore.

Shooting Mayapples is a crime man! those things are lucious and delicious when ripe.AND a great source of Vitamin C. BUT I have to say good eye! and man oh man black morels!!!!! yum and yum. I was driving north up 41 from Princeton to Vincennes and saw 3 flocks of turkeys in three different fields. one flock of a dozen or so. one of about 20 and the last over 30. Man do i wish I had permission to hunt those farms.

My dad grinds up the roots of Mayapples and boils them and puts the mash on the skin cancers on his face. They shrivel up and fall off. Hap

Interesting.  Heard that the roots have chemicals that are used in chemotherapy and that the Native Americans used it to remove warts.  I wonder if it would remove raised moles as well.

Jeff,
A morel is a type of mushroom.  Very tasty.  This is a springtime mushroom that is often found growing about the same time as turkey season.  They can be prepared many ways for the table.  My favorite is split, cleaned, dipped in egg, rolled in cracker crumbs, and pan fried in butter.  Along with some fresh grilled turkey breast or a mess of crappie fillets and you got yourself a great meal!

what the hell are morels?
We like ours deep fried with a little ranch dip the best, but we also like them in spaghetti or grilled with steaks too!  They have a very meaty taste - not as "mushroomy or fungisy" as the button mushrooms you get at the store typically.

Every one around here hunts morel mushrooms. They come in three color variations-black,gray &yellow. My brother in law has sold some for 60-80 $ a pound.M'room hunts sure screw up your turkey hunting though.Lefty has the right idea, just wish I had some crappie fillets!

to me, they taste like smoked bacon..I'd rather eat morel mushrooms than anything except elk steaks

We had what we called "elephant ears" in the woods around my dad's house in So. IL. Some would get as big as a turkey platter. Have no idea what the real name for them are. Soaked in salt water to get the bugs out and deep fried. Man you guys are making me home sick!
