Is there any truth to statement that morels have hollow stems and false morels are solid?

ALW

A buddy of mine found a mess this weekend here in WV.  I believe they were the half free and the brown ones with the heavier caps (black morels ?).  He found them in a mixed hardwood area with a lot of oak and poplar.  We seem to find more in stands of poplar than anywhere else.

Do they taste like other mushrooms? Cause I hate mushrooms so it might not be worth my time. But I have heard so much about this kind in particular that they might be different.

I have never done it, never had em.  Any bad mushroom lok alikes?  Have the next 3 days off so I will give it a try and get  some stumping in.  How do you cook them?

Revive,

to me they taste just like applewood smoked bacon cooking in a cast iron skillet smells...can you think of anything better than that??

why does yellow corn taste different than white corn? There is no truth to the rumor that everything tastes like chicken.

I only know one way..so I will let the xperts tell you how to do them up. If you find some though, let me know, I've looked forever here and never found any.

Best fungus in the world Lewis. My wife used to say they taste like dirt, now she can't wait till April so we can find some.

Bowdude, I would not recommend finding them without someone who's done it before. I hear stories every year of people getting sick from the wrong kind. If they look like the ones Big Dog posted above they are safe.
I take them home, put em in cold saltwater in the fridg for a while. Rinse em off, split in half, roll em in flour, then fry em in butter, then hurry up and eat em before the kids know they're done.  :bigsmyl:

One year I found so many, we couldn't eat them fast enough. I cleaned em as above then instead of fryin em, I put em on cookie sheets and in the freezer for a couple hours. Take out the frozen shrooms and put em in freezer bags. We had fresh-like morels and Turkey breast for New Years dinner that year. My mouth's waterin just thinkin about it.
