Persistence pays off

Went out for what will probably be the last rabbit hunt this year yesterday. Pops and I had struck out so far this year, not connecting with a single bunny until yesterday.
   
To start we chase a few bunnies but no shots, then hear a pheasant in the woods (not common for us), then I hear what I have missed so badly for almost 9 months, the sweet sound of turkey gobbling.    :eek:     :D    

Next we stumble upon the shed of a deer we watched since he first started growing antlers all through the season seeing him nearly every time in the woods (due to antler restrictions he made it through even though he was not very intelligent) I had personally seen him for a stretch of eight straight days at one point and even named him "Tommy the tre" as he had a large fork on the rite side and only a spike on the other. Lying perfectly on top of the snow couldn't have been there 24 hours is our guess was his rite side with the large fork.

  Next came the biggest, prettiest red fox I had ever seen in my life.

  And finally I managed to get an arrow in a bunny, not a great hit and he went about 200 yards, luckily there was snow and tracking was easy, and he didn't find a hole. Unfortunately after finding him it took me 10 minutes to get to the bush he was in. Dad had to throw my bow to me over all the crap I just crawled through to finish the job, as it was almost impassable as it was and carry a 60" super Kodiak with me was not an option. It took me another 15 minutes to be able to dig the bunny out of that bush.

  walking out we decide we are satisfied and begin to leave when we see a second bunny and dad scores with an arrow throw the back of the neck not ten minutes after I got mine, through the entire season we probably had at least 15 hours of hunting in with nothing between us and ten minutes later we each have one.
Better late then never I suppose

   And to top it all off on the ride home I look up and there is a bald eagle flying along side us. (again rare for our area)
Just another day in the woods I will not forget.

Congrats boys! After this weekend at Shawn's it kinda gets in your blood doesn't it? I had forgotten how much fun chasing bunnies could be. Look forward to seeing you two again next year.

Bunnies can be amazingly tough with an arrow sticking thru them. What an awesome memory you have made there------one worthy of sharing for years to come. Not to mention sone nice looking bows!

biorn, it was extremly impressive how far this bunny went with the amount of red that was left on the snow, we would have been satisfied if it was a deer we were tracking with that much blood.

It's post like this that confirm that trad gangers are my kinda folks.  I don't have much hope of getting my Pop out in the woods with a stick and stting, but I do have hope that one my sons and I will hunt together.
