Narrow belt sander

So I want a narrow belt sander for shaping risers, like 1 or 2" wide belt????
Advice ???

I have a nice bench sander I could convert to save money

I use my Rigid oscillating sander for risers. There's only a small amount of hand rasping and sanding left after using it.

This one is air but harbor frt has an electric one for 39.95

I want to finish sand without a backer (Platen)

That air sander kenny will use MORE than all the air from the compressor and gets cold in the hand.
I have die grinders, saws, belt sander, all air, loud too

Are you thinking of something like a 1"x30" belt grinder? If you take the table and platen off you get a slack belt to work with. I use one like this for sharpening knives.

Make one,  all ya need is a used washer motor, some wide pulleys, a belt and a switch.

Speed. I took the table and platen
Off . I still wish it had more room
And went slower

Is that to fast? does it burn the wood sometimes?

New belt. But I think I would have
More control if it went slower .

My observation is that the finer the grit the more likely to burn.

I have a cheap 1 x 30 that has limited usefulness... for anything really. Waste of money.

I also have a 2 x 30 Sorby Proedge which is a really good versatile machine, but mostly for sharpening stuff.

I shape risers on an edge sander and a drill press that I set up with sanding drums.

But I was thinking about getting a 2 x 72" belt sander, like knife makers use, to use on anything/everything. There's a tool place not too far from me that sells one that caught my eye. A Shop Fox W1843. It has a 1 hp motor, and a long 5/8" shaft off the opposite side of the motor that could be used for a sanding drum and/or disk, grinding or sharpening wheel, etc. They want $596 but I think I'd get a lot of use out of it. The whole sanding belt side can pivot from vertical to horizontal, platten can be removed, sand on the belt or the wheel. I don't know. Still kicking it around.
