Thanks for all of the kind words and congratulations. Like I said I was handed a gift with this guy. I do try to go about my hunting carefully and pay attention to details like Barry Wensel covered in his boot camp. Follow those, put in your time, and a good dose of luck.

I had a request for a frontal pic. So why not, a buck like that deserves his due.

While I was cutting up the meat I came across a lump in one of the backstraps. I also noticed a narrow section of the other backstrap that turned out to be scar tissue. When I opened up the lump I found the front 3 inches of a carbon arrow. No broadhead though. I will have to take a look at the carcass when I get back up there.

Wow, very nice! From the sounds of it, it won't take much asking to figure out whose arrow that was.

It's amazing (or maybe not) how many older bucks are carrying hardware. Back in the Ohio days, 80s-90s, every older buck we killed for a while had something in it. One of Dads had a couple 9mm slugs in it. The big 10 pt I killed when I was in high school, that was an old timer, had 3 healed holes in the upper neck, one with the .22 bullet still in there, and a small broadhead hole thru the base of his ear, shot from above that was from that fall.

Congrats Greg. Just saw this. That's a good fully mature stud that has likely spread his genes throughout the area. You did good my friend! And.. it seems like the older you get the bigger they get. Ain't it great?
We are supposed to drop down to 24 degrees tonight. I've preached it many times... the morning after the first hard frost is usually one of the best hunting days of the year. And that should be tomorrow morning here. If you aren't retired you better call in sick. Ha. Best of luck to all. bw

What a great story and buck. Congratulations!

Congratulations again.  Thought about those polished antlers, looks like a buck that has been working a number of scraps.  Did you see some sign?

What a Great Buck and story, Congratulations! It is incredible how they can survive past encounters with hunters and continue to reach Maturity. That is a Trophy of a lifetime.

gordydog

Beautiful buck and shot. Did you sleep at all that night waiting to track in morning? How far did that perfect heart shot go?

Ben Pinney

Way to go Greg!  I'd heard rumor you'd shot a good one.  Very deserving.  Good job.

I would say that he went 150 to 175 yards after the shot. Like I said he was out of there full speed so I imagine it didn't take long for him to cover that.

No, not much sleep after the bourbon wore off. Many times that shot was replayed.

That is crazy cool (and sad) to find that carbon shaft!
