I caught this critter on a trail camera early last Tuesday. I thought bear cub but the tail is not right. I thought maybe cat but the face is not right.
What do you think it is?

Machino

Definitely a bear cub.  Looks like he's dragging his left foot behind and "appears" like a tail.

Steelhead

Its the extemely rare longtailed bear.An evolutionary throwback that shows itself here and their on a miniscule # of contemporary bears.I have only seen one other one in a rare picture on the cover of National geographic decades ago. That created quite a stir in the scientific community.

Fake news
Machino nailed it.Its the leg blending in and looks like a tail.

Yup. Melanistic raccoon. Rare. Had an uncle that coon hunted a lot, and he had stories of  few of black (melanistic) raccoons and a few white (albino) raccoons too.

I agree about the black coon.

Machino

Even melanistic raccoons have lighter ears, a mask of sort, and faint rings.  And I've laid hands on one that I caught in PA a long time ago.  You can faintly make out the foot pad on the left leg of the bear.  The face looks nothing like a coon as well.  But that's like my opinion.

Is that the only pic?

Yep that is the only picture. There are quite a few bears in the area but they have a sixth sense for avoiding cameras and me as well, LOL. I think I am leaning toward a bear cub.
Here is one of the rare pictures of a daylight bear. He is standing in the spot where I shot a deer last fall.

I vote for a bear cub in mid-stride with left leg extended back.  But what do I know- I'm from New Jersey?
