Wood arrows....

 What would be the best option for the lightest finished wood arrow 60-65 spine..

Will be mainly for shooting tournaments but I'm sure I'll hunt with them also , low 40 pound bows , I draw 30 inches and my current 60/65-600 grain arrows shoot fine but are a bit on the slow side.

Would like to get a finished arrow 450 grains or under..

It has been a while since I made any cedars, but I believe you could come in around 450 with a 31" arrow and no crown dip. Certainly under Cedar is the lightest wood I have used.

You could use 5/16" cedars to get less physical weight.

I don't think you can get 5/16 shafts in the heavy a spine. You could probably find 11/32 shafts around 340-350 grains. Still put you over the 450 you're aiming for but could stay around or under 500.
I don't know if anybody is currently selling Sitka Spruce shafts but they tend to be slightly lighter than. cedar.

For the last few years I have been shooting Douglas Fir, but prior to that I had some Sitka Spruce 62-64 spines. I shot those out of a 51# Shrew, and a 53# Blacktail VL , also shot well with a 48# Tall Tines.

I got them from Paul Jalon. Great arrows, they might be what you are looking for.  I think they were lighter than the Surewoods. Really shot nicely.

Paul would be a great guy to ask those questions of.

MnFn is correct, find some Sitka Spruce.  Paul Jalon could make some arrows for you but I don't know if he sells any raw shafts.

Just checked 3Rivers, they only have 40-45 spine Spruce listed on website. I used Spruce years ago. I liked them for the reason you want. A lighter shaft. I used to buy the tapered ones.

Figuring a 125 gr point and 29" BOP, you would start with a 325 gr bare shaft 31".  Those aren't going to be easy to find.  I have a bundle of 65-69 Sitka Spruce.  I'll check them for weight and real spine.

Paul Jalon doesn't sell shafts, only finished arrows. Note on tail tapers: they'll reduce shaft weight around 20 grains or so (and lighten spine a pound or two).

Looks like I will need to experiment and maybe barrel taper some spruce shafts to get what I need...

I traded some tapered spruce arrows a few years back, they did not match the new lighter pulling bow he bought, for some tapered wapiti cedars.  Those were very light and shot very fast, but they were the length and spine that matched someone else as they were.  I don't remember who made them, but they were way too pretty for me to beat up.

Yes we are currently selling Sitka Spruce shafts in both parallel and tapered, sorry dnova but Sitka Spruce is not lighter than Cedar , both have a mass weight of from low 300s to low 400s in a box of 1000 shafts of the same spine, maybe the shafts you have gotten were on the light side.
