The juice has arrived. Pulled one piece down and it is now soaking. The tall pipe is the chamber the sort one is to protect the pump in case resin gets out of the chamber (locked it up once) This piece in in black dye. If it dont float in the morning I will cure it at 174 four hours and pull another one down If it floats got to vac again.

Nice setup Mike. How much vacuum can you pull? I get mine to about 28.5 but it won't go lower. I assumed it's because of location and pressures and all that.
Skeater who?

If my gauge is right 27.5. If you get 30 I would say you got a really strong pump. The maple takes on the juice till it wont float.
I will have a bit left over for youins that want to try it on sumpin else. Better wear prtection though  :scared:

Travis-that looks awesome. Your victim is one lucky dude.

This year has seen a ton of travel for work already and I won't be able to really touch any tools in my shop for a a couple more weeks. Sigh. I think I finally figured out what I want to make. I'll use my poor victim for practice.

Ah David if you gonna practice on Roy me thinks you know the color to use  :bigsmyl:

Just checked the maple 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 19 and some 1/4 pieces have soaked about 2 cups still floating sooo vac again. Probably need to get another chamber and let it soak 3-4 days.

I'm confused about this (nothin new for me :) ).  Wouldn't the absolute Max vac pressure be the same as the barometric pressure?

Maybe the process could be further enhanced by placing the wood and the juice in a tough but flexible plastic bag and then weight it down and submerge it in deep water?

According to calculations, there is .433 PSI per foot of submersion.  One could obtain 30 PSI at a depth of 69.284065'.

At 140 feet the pressure would exceed 60 PSI.  Probably not that many places where we could practically and legally submerge the project.

I foresee a new form of bowyer misbehavior, "pressure poaching". :)

The cabin fever is level reaching dizzying heights.  Come on spring.

Most vacuum pumps can get down to 17-26 microns. 27" hg or more is pretty good.  I'm guessing the thicker the wood(or denser) the longer the pump should run. They're built to run, so even a week or more is fine.  I'm curious if you closed off the chamber how much vacuum you would lose. Might be a good indicator how close you're getting to full saturation

Flem

I can only get 25" hg at 4000'

Never thought elevation would matter that much in a closed system. What does your pump do independently ?
