I was fortunate to take this buck last Friday.  I hunted in the morning on some public ground and didn't see anything.  I packed up at noon and went to a property I recently gained permission on.  I had not set foot on this property until Friday afternoon and my main goal was to get a feel for what was going on and hunt this piece hard next weekend.  Based Google Earth I went to what looked like a good funnel and the wind was perfect.

I got up about 12' and had a nice lane right out in front.  I was set up by about 1:00 and an hour later I hear a movement to my right.  I could see it was a buck coming and later realized him came in following my trail.  He walked to my tree and started sniffing the base of my tree.  I was trying to adjust for a shot but my harness was too tight and I could lean that far forward.  He either heard me or smelled something I left on the ground, but he jumped to about 5 yards directly in front of me.  He was standing broadside and slightly quartering to me.  I hit him solid but I knew it was about two inches back.

He ran out of the creek bed and into some thick pasture.  I knew he was going to die, but I was a little worried about the shot.  I called a few friends and went over my options.  It was either wait over night and risk the coyotes or go after him tonight and risk bumping him.  I opted to look and at 4:30 we found him about 400 yards away.  He was stiff and had been dead a while and I hope he died quickly.

A good friend always mentioned how all of this is a gift from God.  We are blessed to be able to hunt whether public or private.  We are blessed to see animals so close in their natural environment.  We are blessed to enjoy the memories of the hunt.  We are blessed to enjoy eating the animals we hunt.  I am thankful.
