Quieting a primitive bow

I have a flat bow that is shooting pretty well, but it is loud. Brace height, and nocking point seem to be good. The question I have about making it less noisy is that it has a sinew string. Can string silencers such as the fur ones that I use on my ASL's be worked into this sinew without weakening it? Does anyone know the Indians did it? I would like to consider hunting with this bow but the noise is a massive issue. Thanks.

Sam, without holding your bow in my hand I can't say. You could try the string silencers, they shouldn't affect the sinew string. Try tying them on the outside of the string. Anything that will absorb vibration will quiet it down...if that is in fact the problem. Could the string be slapping the bow?

I didn't have a noise issue with my Osage but added acrylic puffs without notable performance depreciation and yes Indians reluctantly used them though their chronographs showed they slowed their carbons down significantly.

I doubt Native Americans worried about string or bow noise just like they didn't bare shaft tune arrows, or even if they made a bad shot on an animal. I imagine they just tracked it and shot again. So much of what we do today in our archery came about in the last 100 years or less. I think a lot of it stemmed from target archery.

Sam if you can safely separate the bundles in the sinew I don't see why it would cause a problem.  All you need to do is tuck one end of the fur strip in, wrap the rest around the string in a nice spiral, then tuck the other end.

You could tie a few fat rubber bands temporarily and see if it helps.

You could always tie on the ends of the fur strips with back sinew so it'll bind to the string and you won't havf to separate the bundles.
