You being buddies with Vance and having spent so much time out west, I'd have thunk your first thought would have been whales on a fly at rod. Now that would be fun!
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

Charlie,
The royal Coachman was always my dad's favorite fly in Idaho.  When I moved from Idaho to Montana the Royal Wulff worked better.  As a general rule, west of the dive I have better luck using the Coachman and east of the divide I have better luck with the Wulff.  Considering the size of whales, you might be better off using a Chubby Chernobal.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.
