I have always used a plain file in the woods, and also the "True Angle" type of sharpener as seen here.

I've always used a file to get the edge set if the head is really dull. Then I use a DMT stone and sharpen like I would a knife. A couple strokes on a crock stick for final touch. I use only two blade heads though.
