Cant post from computer, it says waiting for response then ends up in an error.

Life is to short to pass up anything that could potentially be bow wood!

John Malone

No bow stave in there, but lots of risers. Ill take it.

I don't know what kind of tree it is, but if it's good bow wood, there are bows in there.

All ya need is a straight 36 inch piece, then cut it into billets and z splice them together.

But it will be long time till it's dry enough for that..

John Malone

I'm sure its hickory? But once I split it the grain is twisted and awful knotty toward one end. I count at least 8 trilam risers and several knife and or hatchet handles. Riser wood was what I was expecting from it. It was growing right next to my wild cherries so it had to go anyway.

How long is this section?

Looks clean to me.

Got any leaves to show us? Are those twigs and flowers in the picture from the tree in question?

John Malone

Roy, about 28 inches. Had it been 36 id go for it.
Bowjunkie yes those twigs came from the tree. It maybe ash according to some one on PA.
Hickory or ash that's riser wood right?

The file size of the pictures is too large.

I was thinking Sweet gum, but the flowers and outer branches don't match up. They don't look like hickory or ash flowers either. I don't know.

I was going to say if you could have waited a couple weeks for those new sprouts to mature then you would have a lot easier time identifying what it is.  Any other trees like it around?  You could wait for those leaves to mature... hard to tell just by the bark.  I thought it was a pine tree when I 1st looked at the pics lol

Jeff, it looks like sassafras tree 2 me. . My 2 cents

Eric Krewson

My thoughts as well, sassafras.

BMorv

After seeing their comments, I would have to agree that it's Sassafras.
Look at the new buds on the bottom left of the pic compared to yours.  It's a match imo.

Good eye. It does look like sassyfras. Chew on one of them twigs and you'll know, if you're familiar with the taste. They have that distinct spicy smell when you cut the wood with a chainsaw too.

Bvas

Sassafras twigs always smelled like lemon pledge to me.

I've had bad luck with Sassafras. Every stave I've ever split out twisted badly. Does smell pretty good though.
It's a good day for something.

choochoou

Definitely sassafras by the way it looks to me
It's all fun and games, until someone gets hurt...then its hilarious!

Sassafras has 3 different smells like it has 3 different shape leaves. The roots are the well known root beer smell theb leaves are lemony smelling and the wood has another smell. Once the leaves come out it's easier to tell for someone with a bad smeller.  :bigsmyl:
