Why should I make a mollegabet bow?  What is the advantage if any?

It is one of the oldest style wood bows that has been found...and it seems to be one of the most poplar wood bow style made today.
If you consider this style bow's age and the engineering to accomplish it back in stone age times, it is a pretty amazing accomplishment.

these are not the droids you are looking for.

The advantage is that the very narrow-but-deep rigid tips act like siyahs, giving added impetus to the arrow compared to a conventional flatbow limb tip.  Think of an atlatl mounted on the end of each limb.

The Mollegabet design is dated back to about 12,000 (yep twelve thousand) years ago!!

Second good reason is that for a non-recurve bow they are just plain sexy!   I've been thinking of making my next wood-glass composite in the Mollegabet shape.

I've only seen/shot one and it was an osage bow 58" long. It was shockingly fast with a range of arrow weights and shot nearly silently.

I was thoroughly impressed.

Here you go guys, this one was build by the Master himself, he let me shoot it at NALS and I could'nt pass it up.

Bert Frelink

Wayne not underpowered by any means my friend, I have a date with an Elk in a few days and hope to show you how under powered this bow really is

Bert Frelink

Ken, yes you see a third lamination it is Jatoba in between the Boo and Black Locust.

Wayne, it shoots absolutly amazing, I have not chronographed it but I do shoot high till I get dialed in.
If you could'nt tell already, I like it!!!

I have a lot of red oak, hickory, and maple, so what should I use to build it.  Remember now I am new to this.  Maybe all three?

Mike, start with the hickory. It is the toughest and most forgiving.

Here is one I made from a white oak board with straight grain. I backed it with rawhide prior to skinning for added protection.    While Oak Molle

Hickory, then Maple.  Red Oak is OK but the other two are much superior.
