Excellent work, very nice looking bow and love that finish. How do you apply the epoxy?

Al Dean

I mix 1 tube epoxy with 1/3 cup acetone and spray it on.

I am still searching for a great finish for my bows and cant get Thunderbird or Fullerplast over here so am very interested in the way you do yours. Is Devcon similar to CA or 'superglue' and what size tube is needed/

bigbob2

i 'googled' Devcon and see it is a 2 part epoxy so my question now is if you mix a tube[size?] with acetone how long do you have before it goes off and can you get multiple coats from the one mix or does it go off too quickly? I would hate to have to buy a tube for each coat.

BigJim

bigbob, I am fairly sure we can ship you our Buffalo hide epoxy...aka tbird.
That's not saying the shipping won't hurt a little.
If your interested, send us an email and I'll have Debbie look in to it.

thanks, bigjim

bigbob I mix up 2 tubes of the 2 ton devcon clear which gives me 2/3 cup of spray.  I spray a coat every 30 minutes until used up then let cure 24 hours, wet sand and repeat with as many coats as desired.  No issue with mix starting to set up.  Facts are I leave the mix in my spray gun until finished.

Beautiful work - Is that your own form design or a template from someone like Bingham?

Al Dean

Took a Bingham design originaly, but have change the limb stack which makes thier weight charts useless, but the curve of the limb is basically thiers and the 11 degree limb pad is thiers design.

i AGREE THAT IS A BEAUTIFUL FINISH.  I HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT DOING THAT MYSELF BUT I USE WEST SYSTEMS EPOXY AND IT WILL BREAD DOWN IF EXPOSED TO UV FOR A VERY LONG TIME.  IT REQUIRES A UV TYPE COATING TO BE APPLIED OVER THE EPOXY. I ALSO BUILD CEDAR STRIP CANOES AND I USE MINWAX HELMSMAN SPAR VARNISH TO PROTECT THEM.  I AM WONDERING IF DEVCON NEEDS A UV PROTECTION?

bigbob2

Thank you Al. Big Jim I  will look into it but I believe it wouldn't be allowed as airfreight[ could be wrong ] and not sure about shipping by sea.

Al your work is absolutely stunning!!! I think for my next bow for myself I will have to try a takedown after seeing this one....
