Welcome Will.

japanese bamboo.natural steam tempered @ 250f 90 minutes

Tell me more about this boo please?

Pat B

I don't think you can temper boo with steam. It is the toasting with dry heat that tempers boo or wood.

I know you can bend it with steam, but never heard of tempering with it.  I'd like to know more.

Pat B

I watched James Parker temper boo for one of his Asiatic hornless horn bows(tempered boo belly). He used a propane rosebud torch and had that boo black and on fire as he moved out from one end to the other. I was surprised how dramatically he torched that boo but I've shot these bows and the proof is in the pudding.

Just some playin around with boo is where this idea came from.i noticed after carbonizining, toasting and steaming the 1 1/4 natural(dried whole sawn to slats, ground even as i can) all bent/flexed in different manors.i had seen no one use steamed bamboo for a bow build so why not.
I think the layout will go boo back red ok power lam, rosewood power lam, both lams together will equal 1,erc micro riser, tapered boo belly.the adult bow, mine, will have an additional red oak spliced tapered full length lam.we'll see how it goes.rather be a little heavy than light.just  about finished sandin and tapering.got a new form to build too.it will be adjustable to fit from36'-72'with adjustable r/d.

Roy from Pa

Think I would use hickory in place of oak.

will greer

Dont have it on hand right now.the red oak was cut n split about a year ago.so i again am expirimenting.i see all the"board bows"n my wheels got to turnin.i cut a few rough staves into lams.i used it on my sons bow n its still alive so far. :)  still hasnt settled in on his dw length quite yet.seems pretty tough.hopin it will go with boo good.

It also seems more flexible than kiln dried.heck i just build stuff i think up."not really a churchy friar, never have been."sorry it just came out.watched robin hood last week.really i kinda just play it by eye,n what ive read n tried of course play a factor.i just have too see sometimes.

Pat B

Tempered boo works well on the belly because it increases the compression strength of the boo. You do not want to temper the backing boo though because it will decrease the tension strength of the boo.
