Get it shipped Ink! I can't wait much longer...

I finally have a weekend with some free time. I've heard my lams are ground and should be heading home soon. So it's time to glue up some risers. I hope my friend **S*S*S*&(*(A is ok if I go a little more vanilla than he's used to making himself...

Kelly, I don't measure these things. I put hard, brittle pitch in a small jar and cover I with turpentine. It will dissolve in a few days then I strain it and store in an air tight jar. When you put it on the hot belly the mixture gets soaked up into the wood and the excess turps evaporate and the pitch solidifies in the wood cells.
I use the same process with alcohol instead of the turpentine to make pitch varnish to seal sinew wraps and to seal "primitive" arrows.

4est, that bow looks wonderful, unfortunately you have permission to ship which means it ain't for me  :( . how wide is the hickory and how dramatic is the trapping on it. A hickory pyramid is on my list for bow #2 if #1 doesn't work out. Would like to get the dimensions of it so I have something to work off of.

Thanks, Tony.  The bow is 2 5/8 on the belly and 2 1/8 on the back at the fades, which means the back was trapped 1/2" (1/4" on each side).  I could have gone more and/or made the bow a bit narrower to reduce the mass of the limbs.  However, I like to make my hickory bows a little wider and dead flat across the belly, as past experience has taught me they fret easily and/or take excessive fret if they're too narrow or rounded about the belly.

I also usually will heat treat the belly, which enhances the effect of trapping (that is, further equalizes the tensile/compression forces).  I didn't on this one because it came out nice and only has about 5/8" of string follow, making it a nice, smooth shooter.  Hope that helps!  :)

Pat so a baby food jar would work about how much pitch should I throw in. A bout a .25 jar more or less then top off with turpentine?

razorback

Thanks 4est. I had a hickory pyramid develop compression fractures along one edge, last year. i really like the lines of the bow and want to make another one. Is 2" too narrow for a pyramid bow with hickory? I'm thinking of trapping it early and tempering it before I start serious tillering, you think this will help, along with a flat belly.

Kelly, a baby food jar is perfect. It will depend on how much bark, etc. is in the pitch but .25 toped off with turps should do. The pitch will dissolve slower in the turps than in alcohol so swirl it in the jar every day until the pitch is dissolved.
I tempered the belly on my trade bow again after I got it down to weight. This time after heating and saturating it with turps/pitch again I boned the belly after it cooled. Now I'll let it stay on the form until tomorrow.

I just got my hose in the mail today.  Thanks to help from a TG member.  A big THANK YOU Josh.  Now I've got put the plugs in it and give it a pressure test and might possibly get it glued up and in the form tomorrow.  Maybe that is..  Sorry Roy no pics yet.

Just remember 'D' check for leaks EACH time you do a build, do't ask me how I know.At least I managed to save mine by running an air hose into the hotbox and topping up every 15 mins or so.
