I should have been done by now but I keep second guessing what looks best with the riser...but on a positive note the riser is ready

KellyG

Ok back from vacation and just got caught up.

Ink you can ship anytime you are ready and you to 4est'

Some really good looking bows. Hard to chose a favorite.

8 bows shipped 8 bows received none in the mail.

I am still in a case and it snowed here today so I have not progress.

We are a 11% done.

I just got hardware for the take down for **&^%^*('s bow today.  I've got one more day of "real" work tomorrow, then a couple off.  I'll be able to get the limbs mounted with the new jig I made and get them shaped up and maybe even the riser rough shaped.  Then a ton of sanding - I hate sanding.  So should have some good progress by the end of thursday.

Dude you've always built killer bows and not a thing wrong with that one. After tons of overtime the last week or so I got busy back on mine yesterday.... And dang I didn't know that stave was that out of line till I looked it over. Anyways I did some heat treatment on one limb and heated the handle to track the string down the center.

Tweaked the limb a bit.

Added a little heat and didn't take much to line it up.

Limb was still off by over an inch so I heated at the handle to line it up.

I guess in a few days maybe I can put it on the tree.

My lams are out for grinding. My glass is in the shop. But my problem is what to do for the riser?I just can't make up my mind. I may need a trip to the lumber store to inspire me...

$est, nice job!

Always been a fan of the pyramid board bows. That is a fine example for sure.

Got a couple red oak boards int he works now.... wish I had a good spot to get hickory boards instead.

Jim Rocole

bows have looked outstanding this year.

Oh, and Olin - I'm impressed by the number of draw knives on your wall in the background...

I heat treated the belly of the persimmon bow a few days ago. While the wood was hot I saturated it with pine pitch and turpentine mix. This is to replenish the natural oils that were forced out by tempering. Today I added lemonwood tip overlay and a piece of leather to fill out the back of the handle.

Pat do you do that for every wood or just particular species? And what does that do for you? Decrease moisture absobtion?

Pat B

Eric, primarily with whitewoods to help increase the compression strength. I heat treat most bows but not as much with osage, etc. that are compression strong. Marc St Louis, who wrote the chapter on heat treating in TBBIV, told me about adding the turpentine/pitch to the hot wood. He said it replaces some of the resins that are force out by the heat treating.  I'm reducing the weight on this bow quite a bit so I've lost most of the char color and probably some of the resin too.
I use Tru-Oil for a finish and it protects the wood and slows the hygroscopic rate.

I understand about heat treating but was wondering about the pitch and turpentine

KellyG

Pat I bet it makes them smell good also! What is the ratio of pitch to turpentine?

OK &$.#--.@ I do believe I have made up my mind we're going to try to go with this...I think   :banghead:
