Is the blue painters tape you get from Wal Mart ok for masking of limbs? Does it have to be a high temp. tape?

Trux Turning

That's what I use... Some folks like the green frogg tape better

If you have a Menards nearby Pick up their brand of green masking tape. It has worked well for me and is a bit cheaper than the name brands.

All the blue stuff has worked for me.  Watch out for the stuff that is metric, might not fit your glass.

The blue stuff works great but the longer you leave it on the harder it is to peel off.

kennym

Exactly what 7 Lakes said, I grind the edges, and change tape right then!

Different masking tapes have different "clean release" times. The clean release time is when you can remove the tape and not leave any residue. If you exceed the clean release time you stand a chance of leaving behind residue. The more you exceed the time the more residue can be left.
Masking tape is not just masking tape. There are any number of different tapes with different adhesive strengths, clean release times, different temperature tolerances, etc.

I have been buying the cheapest masking tape I can get because after a short period, it all sticks too well anyway.
It has never been an issue for me though as I use a chisel to remove the tape and it comes off with ease!
Gonna want to make sure there are no burrs on the flat side of the chisel and I always work from the riser to the tips to reduce the chance of picking up a sliver from the end cuts on the glass. Lay the chissel flat and just remove tape like you were shaving it off.
I have been doing this for a long time (6 or 7 years) and have never damaged a bow and can remove tape on both sides in about 1 minute or less.
Some glass I use has had tape on it for 4 plus months since I will tape up a couple hundred pieces at a time or so.

I'm sure this would be too scary for some, but it works.

Thanks guys, I'll give the blue stuff a try.
KennyM, I just about got my form ready to go. I need to ask you a few questions I'll prolly send you an email or private message on here.
Thanks,

I use 3M Production tape. Cheaper than the blue tape and just as good for bow building.
