I found this piece of wood at the big box store and it made me wonder what it would look like with a little stain under glass.

I built a few longbows last year in the shop classroom of the school i work at.  I used their straight limbed form and their oven.  This year i wanted to build my own form and oven.

I enjoy doing as much as i can myself so i wanted to grind my own tapers.

More to come after i get to a computer to shrink images.

I decided on making 2 different forms.  A reflexed Hill style for and a reflexed reverse handle form.  I figure with a little modification the reverse handle form could also make string follows.

I'll be staying tuned into this one

If you folks don't mind me asking, what is the thickness of your typical form material? I've heard to use a good grade of plywood, but the thickest I've usually seen is only about 3/4"?

Thanks, Zane

Roy from Pa

Glue two pieces of 3/4 plywood together. I used birch plywood.

This is LVL (laminated veneer lumber). It came 1.75" thick.  I ran it through our school's planer to get it to 1.5" thickness.  Easier if you have a planer.

You know...you think everything looks so good until you get to this point and then you start to second guess everything.

So what are you second guessing??

I just wasn't happy with the shape of the form at this point.  It didn't seem like the perfect arc i swear i drew up.  The glass sure shows any imperfection.  It really came out well though.

Here is a better picture of the form.

And here is my oven with digital controller and circulation fan.

This is the first bow build that i ground my own tapers.  I bought some taper sleds from Bigfoot Bows and used my schools overhead drum sander.

The stack:

.050 clear glass
.100 maple with .002 taper
.150 aboo .002 taper
6" .030 brown core tuff tip wedge
.140 aboo .002 taper
.100 maple. 002 taper
.050 clear glass

.590 total stack

15" ziricote riser

So far so good.
