John Scifres

I took advantage of a break in the rain and put about 40 arrows through my new bow.  Mmmmmmmm is all I can say.  I am on vacation this week and we are going to our lakehouse.  There are tons of carp in the shallows and I am dying to try to smoke one, with the bow and then the smoker.  Perhaps I will be one of the first to make meat (if you can call smoked carp meat) with one of the trade bows this year.

Andy, I'm glad you enjoyed the bow. I know it came in light for what you requested, btu once I shot it, I thought it was exactly the way it wanted to be and I didn't want ruin it fixing something that wasn't broken.

It was hard to ship that one off, but it found a nice new home.
No problem LittleBen. It looks great, is well built and nice to shoot. What else can one ask for ?

All these sharp lookin' bows are making me feel anxious. Still working on my trade bow in between a part time job, doctor visits, and getting summer school lined out.

My bow for *********** is pulling 50 lbs at 24"; only a few more inches to go. I've shot it a couple dozen times and it's shooting pretty well. May not quite make the deadline, but it'll be close.

I'm looking for a shipping tube that will hold a 60" 55# Osage Longbow.  :archer:

John, here's a recipe for carp.
Fillet the fish, and cover with a dry rub made from black pepper, salt, a bit of brown sugar, garlic powder, and whatever dry herbs you like.
Place them on a well soaked cedar plank and cook on the grill using indirect heat.
After 1/2 hour per inch of thickness, remove from the grill, throw away the carp and eat the plank.

  Carver that was freaking funny.

I'm gonna try to smoke them but my biggest question is do you have to bite the tip off or can you use one of those guillotine cigar thingies?  Also, how do you keep them lit?

haha, I've never had smoked carp but I guarantee I eat it ... I'll eat damn near anything.

I say if you've eaten canned smoked herring you can eat any fish in the water.

Pete W if you have a carpet or curtain shop nearby ask them if they have any cardboard cores around that the material comes wound around. Usually they just trash them. they are light but strong cardboard tubes and ideal for such a purpose.

Another update on my trade bow...
The third time was a charm!  I had lots of problems getting my bow to the target draw and target weight.  Below are some picts of the length  hickory bow tillered to #60 pounds at 28 inches!  I'm very pleased with the tillering and will finish the fine sanding today...and hopefully get a coat of Tung oil on it as well.

Question – we have received 9" of rain this month and the humidity has been extremely high...not ideal for working on a hickory bow (luckily most of my work up until now was in a low-humidity basement).  I would like to put the sanded bow on a form, heat it with my heat gun to lower the moisture content and then add a coat of Tung oil in an effort to keep the moisture from coming back into the bow...do you think this will work?  The bow is taking a little set...no more than normal for a hickory.  If not, any other options?

Thanks!

Dino
