I got a hackberry stave in the mail today. This will be my first shot at a self bow. The stave is 68". My plan is to leave it 1.75" to mid limb and then taper it to 1/2".

how should I handle this knot? it is about 5" from the end of the stave and right in the middle of the limb

Started on my swap bow today for *********.  Cut some quarter sawn sycamore and some figured walnut for limbs/riser today.  No pics yet - my phone died.  I'll hafta get them tomorrow.  But man, oh man!  That quarter sawn sycamore looks sa-weet!  I may have to keep this one for myself and make something else for the swap!

One of two things will happen; it'll either work or it won't.

Citycop, I would just go for a non bending handle since it's your first self bow and not be to awful concerned about that knot. But on the other hand if it does bend just a hair at the handle it should still be fine. Just be careful with a scraper when cleaning around it and don't violate your ring and you will be golden!

Sounds like a good combination, but then I've always been partial to curly maple.

went to Kalamazoo yesterday. great show, gave me lots of ideas. now to go shopping for **************'s materials. GREAT job fellas on your progress

All the bows are looking great guys!

I am still thinking.  I am thinking that this piece of osage looks pretty tuff but may make a really interesting bow.  Got some nice skins that would come alive on something with this many curves and bumps.

I'll take the bark and sap wood off to see what it looks like.

Here's what I've got going so far.

Got a couple knives to work on first, but planning on some spliced veneers on the limbs with a bamboo core, and trying to show off that figure in the walnut with a curvy sycamore accent in the riser.  Should be really purty for **^&$&@**!

I have this one to a 6" brace height and the r/d limb is challenging but I do have it pulled to 23".  I may hold off on the tiller shot until ________  _________ _ gets it.  I've short shot it a few times and it currently feels nice.  I'm just scraping to hit weight now.  I think 15# I was shooting for   :knothead:

Oh and this might end up arriving as well...

Wow!, You guys are really cranking it up. Sure are some nice looking glass and self bows starting to take shape.  Someone said it before and I agree, the quality of bows and workmanship gets better every year.  Keep it coming!

Citycop

I took some of the belly wood off the hackberry stave today. I'm thinking a 4" handle and 2"fades how does that sound for a 68" bow?
