Stiks, when? Should I do this as soon as I got the braced tiller lined out? or after I'm closer to weight?

Here's a before & after pic after steaming & clamping the handle area to a jig.

That's it for now. Busy with work, will update when I get back to it.

Dennis If you got her braced and the string is tracking good I would go ahead and temper the belly before going to much farther. Once your you get any set the belly cells are already crushed. If you temper the belly before this happens it help reduce some set.

Thanks Stiks! I'll give her a nice slow toast this evening and leave her clamped up for the night.

Here's some pic's from the start until today. Started with a 5/4" x 6" x 8' board from a local sawmill. Sawed down to a 2" x 8' slat.

Glued on a 8" handle section after cutting the board to 70".

Then laying out the handle and tips to be cut out on the band saw.

LeeNY

took the slat down to 1 1/2" after band sawing the handle and tips. I reduced the overall thickness down to below 5/8". The bow started to bend, reduced further to floor tiller.

Scraped till the limbs were moving equally 8" on the long string. I put on a cull today to induce some reflex.

More tomorrow!!!!

Looking good all.  I have to start over on mine came in to light.   So back to the drawing board.

Shawn, was the red core glass bow?

It didn't change it from wood core?
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Kenny It was the red glass core bow. After reviewing my notes I was the one at fault I forgot to add the second veneer thickness into my stack. So I was off by .025 stupid mistake.   It's ok I have some more of the same stuff.  The bow worked out fine because someone came by to look and shoot some bows and he just had to have the red cored bow.

Thanks for the help Jess and Kenny

Pretty much done with my trade bow! I'll shoot it all in over the next week and mull over details but it's ready to go now.
Specs:
Made from a Hickory stave that I cut myself.
Jasper tip overlays collected by me from a cave on Mt Jasper in Berlin, NH that had been used for thousands of years for the same purpose by Native Americans.
52# @28"
63 1/2" nock to nock.
Tips steamed into reflex to offset any set taken.
Belly heat treated with heat gun.
Flemish twist string B-50 with 16 strands.
Stained with Dark Walnut stain.
Finished with 5-6 coats of Helmsmans clear semi-gloss spar urethane thinned with mineral spirits with one coat of car wax.
Handle wrapped with leather and contrasting darker leather accents.
I sure hope ********* like it!

Red and black have always been a favorite combination of mine, so that bow will be pefect for me. Heck I'd even come over from NY to pick it up  :)

Thanks Guys. I added wool puffs to the string and not sure if I should add something to the two strings I left long on the handle or trim them off. Maybe tie a turkey feather on it for a wind detector? I dunno. Little details like that are all that's left to think about. I really love this bow and it's going to be tough to let it go but I know it's going to a good home. I have to wait for the ok to ship though sooooooo I wait. Gotta go get a ship tube.
