Looks like black cherry to me.

Looks like it could be black cherry but it also looks like pecan.  Any leaves still on the ground around it?  Long skinny leaf stems?

First find out if you have black cherry in your area. If so, it could be, though I have found that the difference between the sap wood and heart would ismuch more distinct, though the colour and bark do look cherryish.

The bark in the first pic said cherry to me.

Well, it sat there, roots intact and leaning just off the ground for several weeks.  I finally get ahold of a chainsaw Sunday evening, and they cut it up and hauled it off Monday before i could get out there!  Waaaaaah!!  And after revisiting the travesty, i'm pretty sure it was pecan.  Oh well, guess you can't lose what you never had!

I still think cherry. It looks too red to be pecan, one of the hickorys.
